The Halloween pumpkin is a relatively new addition to the holiday, only becoming popular in the last few hundred years.
Prior to that, turnips were the most common vegetable used to carve lanterns.
Pumpkins, however, are much easier to carve and their large size made them ideal for creating spooky, jack-o-lanterns.
The tradition of carving pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns is thought to have originated in Ireland, with the first recorded instances of jack-o-lanterns being made from turnips.
The practice then spread to Britain, where pumpkins were more commonly used.
It is thought that the tradition was brought to America by Irish immigrants in the 19th century.
Today, jack-o-lanterns are a staple of Halloween decorations, with people of all ages carving them.
They can be carved into a variety of shapes and sizes, and often have humorous or scary faces carved into them.
