Eyeglass wearers understand the primary causes for a prescription are astigmatism, myopia, hyperopia, and presbyopia. However, do we have a grasp on the history of glasses, or their future? Eyeglasses were invented in the 13th century, and were popularly used by scholarly monks. Roughly 500 years later, things began to change.
In 1784, Benjamin Franklin invented bifocal glasses, allowing him to read and see from further distances. Furthermore, the 18th century brought about massive change to the design of eyeglasses- adding temples to keep glasses steady over the ears. This also allowed hands-free use for the first time.
In the 19th century, mass-produced frames and lenses provided universal access to glasses. The 20th century shifted focus to the style and fashion of eyewear. Lenses became lighter, less breakable, and coated to reduce harmful light, as well. Today, a shocking 64% of America’s population wears glasses. Keep reading down to the infographic below as it describes the form and functionality of eyewear, as well as how eyeglasses work scientifically.
