"History in the Dust" PAINTING PROJECT
THE CALGARY STAMPEDE COMMUNITY SPIRIT NEWSLETTER released the following last Friday:
100 Years of Chuckwagon Racing: “History in the Dust"
Since 1923, Chuckwagon racing has been a staple of Western tradition at the Calgary Stampede. While some things have changed since then, the excitement and rush of the Cowboys Rangeland Derby Chuckwagon Races remain the same.
This year, the Calgary Stampede Foundation, in collaboration with the Calgary Stampede Chuckwagon and Public Art Committees, is proud to present the History in the Dust mural project, a nod to the celebration of 100 years of Chuckwagons in 2023, which will be mounted on the side of the Nutrien Western Event Centre on Stampede Park.
“Along with Public Art and the Stampede Foundation, we're proud to honour the past, present and future of Chuckwagon racing with a new mural on Stampede Park," says Brian Reimer, First Vice-Chair of the Chuckwagon Committee. "With a powerful image from renowned artist Paul Van Ginkel, we're poised to capture the spirit of the sport for generations to come.”
Highlighting a moment in history, Paul Van Ginkel shares his enthusiasm for the Calgary Stampede and the Chuckwagon races through an incredible work of visual art. The thrill of 100 years of Chuckwagon racing is captured in this stunning art piece that will be enjoyed by the community for many years to come.
Canvas and paper reproductions of the artwork are available for purchase from Paul’s website link: https://www.paulvanginkel.com/vanginkel-prints.aspx. A portion of the proceeds will be used to offset the cost of the project. This large-scale mural will be visible throughout many areas in and around Stampede Park.
Members of the public are invited to be a part of history, too. The Calgary Stampede Foundation is now accepting donations for this mural. By donating, you can be part of bringing this incredible piece of art to life in its permanent location, where our community and guests from around the world will feel the energy of the iconic Cowboys Rangeland Derby and its place in our Western heritage.
Donations can be made online through Canada Helps: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/m/81100?qrcode=1&v2=true, in person or by mail (Calgary Stampede Foundation, 1410 Stampede Trail SE, T2G 2W1). A tax receipt will be issued for all eligible donations.

“History in the Dust, Celebrating 100 Years of Chuckwagon Racing at The Calgary Stampede". 40X70” oil painting by?www.PaulVanGinkel.com, 2023.
Currently its a 3 wagon race, however, historically it was a 4 wagon race. So if you look closely “in the dust” you will see the 4th wagon (and outrider).
The original 40X70" oil painting, the paper print (20X29" framed) and canvas ("Giclee") print (38 X 64" framed).
