History of Cardiac Catheterization vol.3: Evolution of Coronary Arteriography Techniques
Terumo Interventional Systems
Pushing Boundaries in Interventional Medicine
After Dr. Sones performed the first coronary arteriography in 1958, coronary arteriography techniques continued to evolve. Then, with Dr. Sones publication on the results of selective coronary arteriography in 1959, this diagnostic procedure became suitable for clinical application.
During the 1950s, the process for coronary arteriography was dominated by the Sones method, which required an incision in soft tissue to expose the artery or vein and insertion of the catheter under direct visualization. Later, in 1962, Dr. Howard Ricketts and Dr. Herbert Abrams succeeded in puncturing the femoral artery percutaneously and inserting a catheter with a guide wire, a method known as the Seldinger technique and one still used to this day.
This introduction of catheters to contrast administration led to the use of catheters in endovascular treatments in the 1960s and the start of interventional therapy, where #Terumo Interventional Systems continues to support healthcare professionals today.
