Nice timeline! In 2006, IBM Watson Research Center created a supercomputer, IBM Watson designed to win the TV game, Jeopardy! It used Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, and Information retrieval techniques. IBM Watson consisted of 90 computers with 2,880 processor threads and 16,000 gigabytes of RAM. It could process 500 gigabytes per second. IBM researchers found that Wikipedia titles contained at least 95% of the answers to randomly selected Jeopardy! questions, so it was trained on all of Wikipedia. It was also trained on 200 million pages of other content. IBM Watson used various databases to connect documents and had an ensemble of around 100 algorithms. It was trained on around 25,000 questions and played rehearsal matches, winning 65% of them. However, Watson could only provide factoids and was not capable of solving complex problems like cancer research, despite IBM's claims. After spending billions of dollars, IBM scaled back its ambitions in healthcare and sold part of the Watson Health business to a private equity firm.
