Historical European Sign Brackets
This is a photo of from Salzburg, Austria that shows a typical sign mounted in a European historical district. In Germany, one is technically called an Eisen Schild Halterung (Iron Sign Holder) and you can find them throughout Europe. They could be produced new by local artisans but, because of the patina, I think that the holders are antique brackets that are retrofitted (like with the McDonald's "M" in the photo) with new icons as locations change hands. Since further study is clearly needed, I will sacrifice myself to visit as many European cities as is necessary ;-)

7 年love this type of artwork, craftsmanship, history, signage - i always find it interesting how much these are loved and sadly going away in the interest of the 'clean/simple' approach to everything.... of course there's a place for everything ! now about Mcd's taking up real estate here / uhmmmm

7 年Salzburg is the "capital" of ornate sign holders. Let me know when you need a research assistant on this topic.
