An ancient historic road in Jerusalem going back to biblical times, more than 2,000 years ago, has been uncovered by a group of archeologists. The most important part of this discovery is knowing that it was the villainous Pontius Pilate who commissioned the construction of this street. While the Roman governor of Judea played the key role in Jesus’ death, the street served as a path of pilgrimage for the Jews and it took 10 years to build. Upon completion, it was more than a third of a mile long and measured 26 feet wide. The stepped street led to the base of a temple where Jewish pilgrims journeyed to during religious holidays.
Based on current findings, it would have been the “Times Square” of Jerusalem – a wide road with plenty of stalls and shop along the way. Located beneath the Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan, the road is currently like being in a tunnel and uncovering it has been a major engineering feat.
Among the discovered artifacts found are small coins dating from the Great Jewish Revolt before the Romans destroyed the Temple and Jerusalem in 70 AD.
Soon half of the Pilgrimage Road will open to the public and will give visitors insight into what it was like to worship God in the time of Jesus.
