Beginning in the winter of 2024, Microsoft will be teaming up with more than 60 labor unions on formal training on how artificial intelligence works and will create "an open dialogue" on how AI will impact workers.

The initiative marks the first formal collaboration on AI between labor unions and the technology industry and coincides with growing concerns that artificial intelligence could displace workers. The agreement also includes a template for "neutrality" terms that would make it easier for unions to organize at Microsoft.

"This partnership reflects a recognition of the critical role workers play in the development, deployment and regulation of AI and related technologies," said AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler, who called the collaboration "a groundbreaking" and "historic" alliance.

How the EU Plans to Regulate Advanced AI Models

The European Union's preliminary deal on advanced ChatGPT model operation is seen as a key part of the world's first comprehensive AI regulation . Developers of general purpose AI systems must meet basic transparency requirements, unless they're provided free and open-source, according to an EU document seen by Bloomberg.

Models deemed to pose a "systemic risk" would be subject to additional rules, according to the document. The EU would determine that risk based on the amount of computing power used to train the model. Currently, the only model that would automatically meet this threshold is OpenAI's GPT-4, according to experts.

"Open dialogue" is a good thing, but I cannot see it having any change to the foreseen outcome re product profiles and owners/investors trying to use powerful tools to increase benefits for themselves. Staff will be impacted from changes to jobs to disappearance of jobs.

Transparancy should be taking place with any person using any type of technology including open source. When we can understand how inclusion involves everyone globally, perhaps then, we will have succeeded in understanding the value of humanity.
