I had the incredible privilege of witnessing Kirsty Coventry's historic achievements firsthand at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Seeing her dominate in the pool, winning gold, silver, and bronze medals for Zimbabwe, was nothing short of inspiring. Her performances were not just victories for her country but also a moment of immense pride for Africa as a whole.
Watching her stand on the podium, representing the continent with grace and determination, was a testament to her hard work, resilience, and the power of sport to unite and uplift. Now, as she aims for the highest leadership role in the Olympic movement, I can’t help but reflect on those moments and how they shaped the journey that has brought her to this pivotal point in history.
Kirsty Coventry: A Historic African Bid for IOC Leadership
Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry is poised to make history as she campaigns to become the first African and first woman to lead the International Olympic Committee – IOC in its 130-year history.
The 41-year-old Olympic champion is among seven candidates vying to succeed Thomas Bach in the 20 March presidential election at the 144th IOC Session in Greece.
Coventry’s candidacy is particularly significant for Africa, a continent with immense sporting talent but limited representation in global sports governance.
If elected, she would elevate Africa’s voice on the world stage, ensuring greater investment in sports development, infrastructure, and opportunities for young athletes across the region.

A Champion for Change
As Africa’s most decorated Olympian - with seven Olympic medals, including two golds - Coventry has dedicated her career to advancing the Olympic movement. She has served on the IOC Executive Board, overseen the progress of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics (the first Olympic event to be hosted in Africa), and has been Zimbabwe’s Minister of Sport, Arts, and Recreation since 2018.
Her leadership vision focuses on gender equality, anti-doping efforts, athlete empowerment, and governance reforms within the IOC.
"In Paris 2024, we achieved gender parity in competition, but in federations and national committees, the gap remains significant," she noted, advocating for greater female representation in leadership roles.
A Leadership Rooted in Ubuntu
Coventry’s vision for the IOC is guided by the Ubuntu philosophy - "I am because we are" - which she believes is essential for a more inclusive and collaborative Olympic movement.
“The IOC's communication must evolve. Leadership is not just about listening but actively using the experience of members to strengthen the movement,” she stated, distinguishing her leadership style from that of outgoing President Thomas Bach.
With the rise of e-sports, Coventry also recognises the need for balance, stating, "Esports is growing rapidly, but we must define our role while ensuring our values remain intact. It’s not about replacing traditional sports but understanding how to engage with new generations."
Aligning with ProTouch Africa’s Mission
Coventry’s vision aligns closely with the work that ProTouch Africa is doing through initiatives like Podium Pursuit, which is dedicated to supporting African athletes in reaching their full potential on the global stage.
By advocating for better funding, development programs, and stronger governance in African sports, Coventry’s leadership could provide greater opportunities for elite athletes from Africa to compete at the highest levels.
ProTouch Africa’s mission to bridge the gap between African talent and international success would greatly benefit from an IOC president who understands the unique challenges faced by athletes from the continent and is committed to enhancing pathways to global podiums.
If elected, her leadership would be a defining moment for Africa, ensuring the continent plays a larger role in shaping the future of global sports.
Good Luck, Kirsty Coventry! ????
