Hispanic Heritage Month Culture Highlight: John Coloma

I’m John Louis Coloma, and my roots are a fascinating blend of Filipino and Puerto Rican heritage. My parents were born and raised in Greenwich, Ct and still presently there with my younger sister and brother.??Currently I am settled in the Jersey City area, but we’ve also had the privilege of living downtown Manhattan, NYC, for a good four years.

Adventure runs deep in our family. We’re passionate about outdoor activities, be it hiking, skiing, mountain biking, or indulging in my dad’s love for fishing and hunting. But at the heart of it all, what truly binds us is our appreciation for our cultural backgrounds. Our family gatherings are an exquisite fusion of Filipino and Puerto Rican culinary traditions, where we savor the rich tapestry of flavors that define our heritage.

In addition to our immediate family, we’ve formed close-knit bonds with friends who we consider as extended family, particularly my mom’s circle of friends since she is an only child. Periodically, we embark on a journey to Puerto Rico, soaking in the culture, relishing the cuisine, and reconnecting with relatives on my dad’s side. It’s a cherished tradition we eagerly anticipate.

My life is an incredible journey through these two vibrant cultures, and I’m immensely grateful for the strong family connections and exhilarating experiences that come with it.
