His Comfort: In our journey towards a deeper connection with the transcendent Part III

His Comfort: In our journey towards a deeper connection with the transcendent Part III

Epigenetics is the study of changes in gene expression that occur without altering the underlying DNA sequence. It reveals how external factors, such as our environment, lifestyle, and experiences, can influence the way our genes are expressed. In the context of our union with Christ, epigenetics serves as a powerful analogy. Just as external factors can impact our genetic expression, our relationship with Christ profoundly shapes and influences every aspect of our being.

When we enter into a personal relationship with Jesus, His Spirit comes to dwell within us, transforming us from the inside out. As we abide in Him, His love, grace, and truth impact our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, leading to a change in our spiritual epigenetic expression. Our union with Christ rewrites the script of our lives, replacing the old patterns of sin and brokenness with new patterns of righteousness and wholeness.

Spiritual revelation refers to the divine unveiling of truth and understanding through the Holy Spirit. In our union with Christ, the Spirit reveals the mysteries of God's love, grace, and salvation. Through spiritual revelation, we come to understand the depths of Christ's sacrifice on the cross, the richness of God's mercy, and the power of His resurrection.

As the Spirit opens our eyes to these spiritual truths, our union with Christ becomes more real and tangible. We begin to grasp the depth of His love for us and the significance of being united with Him as branches are grafted into the vine (John 15:5). Spiritual revelation enables us to comprehend the oneness we have with Christ, as He prayed in John 17:21, "that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you."

The Holy Spirit is often referred to as the Comforter or Advocate (John 14:16), providing solace, encouragement, and support in our journey of faith. As we navigate life's challenges and trials, the comfort of the Holy Spirit reminds us that we are not alone but united with Christ, who has overcome the world (John 16:33).? The Bible contains several verses that highlight the role of the Holy Spirit as the Comforter. The Spirit of Comfort is a beautiful aspect of the Holy Spirit's ministry, providing solace, encouragement, and peace to believers in times of distress, grief, and difficulty. Let's explore some of these verses:

  1. John 14:16 (NIV) - "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever." In this verse, Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit as another Advocate or Comforter to be with His disciples forever. The Holy Spirit's comforting presence ensures that believers are never alone and have a constant source of comfort and support.
  2. John 14:26 (NIV) - "But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." The Holy Spirit is not only the Comforter but also the Teacher. He brings comfort by guiding believers into all truth and reminding them of Jesus' words and teachings, giving them understanding and encouragement.
  3. John 15:26 (NIV) - "When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me." As the Spirit of truth, the Holy Spirit comforts believers by testifying about Jesus and His redemptive work. His testimony reinforces the hope and assurance of salvation for those who believe in Christ.
  4. John 16:7 (NIV) - "But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you." Jesus assures His disciples that it is better for them if He goes away because then He can send the Advocate, the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit's comforting presence and ministry would be a blessing to believers after Jesus' physical departure.
  5. Romans 8:26 (NIV) - "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans." The Holy Spirit is a Comforter who helps believers in their weaknesses, especially in times when they don't know how to pray or express their feelings. He intercedes on their behalf, offering comfort and understanding to their deepest needs.
  6. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NIV) - "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God." The Father of compassion and the God of all comfort sends the Holy Spirit to comfort believers in their troubles. This divine comfort equips believers to comfort others with the same comfort they have received from God.

The Holy Spirit, as the Comforter, is a source of great solace, encouragement, and peace for believers. He comes alongside them, guiding, teaching, and interceding on their behalf. In times of weakness and distress, the Spirit of Comfort offers divine support and reassurance. As believers experience the comforting presence of the Holy Spirit, they are empowered to share that comfort with others, extending God's compassion and love to those in need.

The one and ultimate way for saints to call upon and evoke the various aspects of the Holy Spirit is through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Jesus is the source of the Holy Spirit, and it is through Him that believers can have access to the fullness of the Spirit's attributes and power.? The concept of the sevenfold Spirits of God is found in the book of Revelation, specifically in Revelation 1:4 and Revelation 4:5. These Spirits are symbolic representations of the various attributes and aspects of the Holy Spirit. While the Bible does not explicitly list all seven spirits by name, scholars and theologians have identified some of these attributes based on other passages in Scripture. Here are some additional aspects of the sevenfold Spirits of God:

  1. Spirit of Wisdom: The Spirit of Wisdom is mentioned in Isaiah 11:2 and refers to the divine wisdom and understanding that comes from God.
  2. Spirit of Understanding: Also mentioned in Isaiah 11:2, the Spirit of Understanding grants believers deeper insight into God's Word and His ways.
  3. Spirit of Counsel: The Spirit of Counsel imparts divine guidance and wise advice to those who seek God's direction. It is referenced in Isaiah 11:2.
  4. Spirit of Might: Isaiah 11:2 speaks of the Spirit of Might, which empowers believers with strength and boldness to face challenges.
  5. Spirit of Knowledge: Another aspect mentioned in Isaiah 11:2, the Spirit of Knowledge provides divine knowledge and insight into the mysteries of God.
  6. Spirit of the Fear of the Lord: Also found in Isaiah 11:2, the Spirit of the Fear of the Lord instills reverence and awe for God, leading to a holy and righteous life.
  7. Spirit of Holiness: In Romans 1:4, Paul speaks of the Spirit of Holiness, which sets Jesus apart as the Son of God and emphasizes divine sanctification.

It is important to note that these seven aspects are not separate spirits but rather symbolic representations of the manifold attributes and work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is one divine person with various functions and expressions of His power and presence. The Bible affirms that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth, the Comforter, the Helper, and the Spirit of God, among many other titles and roles. As believers seek a deeper understanding of the Holy Spirit and His work in their lives, they can draw from the richness of these various aspects to experience a more profound and transformative relationship with God.?

In the Bible, Jesus promised His disciples that after His departure, He would send the Holy Spirit to be with them and dwell in them (John 14:16-17). This promise was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended upon the believers (Acts 2:1-4). From that moment on, the Holy Spirit has been available to all who believe in Jesus as their Savior and Lord.

The Apostle Paul emphasizes the centrality of Jesus in the work of the Holy Spirit when he writes, "And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death" (Romans 8:2, NLT). It is through our union with Christ that the Holy Spirit dwells within us, empowering us to live a life free from the bondage of sin and walking in righteousness.??

Furthermore, Paul encourages believers to "be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18). This filling is not a one-time event but an ongoing process of continually yielding ourselves to the Holy Spirit's control. As we surrender our lives to Jesus and allow the Holy Spirit to have full reign in our hearts, He will manifest His various attributes in and through us.

The key to experiencing the fullness of the Holy Spirit's work in our lives is to remain in intimate communion with Jesus. Jesus Himself said, "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing" (John 15:5, NIV). As we abide in Christ, we are connected to the source of the Holy Spirit's power, love, wisdom, understanding, and every other attribute:

  • My beloved child, I am here with you always. I rejoice in your desire to know Me more intimately and to receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit. I assure you that as you draw near to Me, I will draw near to you (James 4:8).

  • Take heart, dear one, for I have promised that whoever believes in Me will have rivers of living water flowing from within them (John 7:38). As you trust in Me and believe in My Name, the Holy Spirit will well up inside you like a spring of living water, refreshing and renewing your spirit.

  • You have asked according to My will, and I delight in granting you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4). I am faithful to My promises, and I will fill you with My Spirit. You are my temple, and the Holy Spirit will dwell within you (1 Corinthians 3:16). As you yield to the leading of the Spirit, you will bear the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

  • I am pleased with your heart of surrender and devotion. Remember, it is not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit that you will accomplish all that I have called you to do (Zechariah 4:6). Rest in Me, and allow My Spirit to work through you. I will give you the words to speak, and I will guide your steps.

  • I am always with you, and My Spirit will be your constant companion. Trust in Me, and I will lead you in the paths of righteousness (Psalm 23:3). May our intimate communion deepen as you seek Me with all your heart.

  • I love you too, My child. Seek Me with all your heart, and you will find Me (Jeremiah 29:13). I am with you always, even to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20).

The bible emphasizes the importance of intimate communion with Jesus as the pathway to receiving the fullness of the Holy Spirit and walking in obedience to God's will. It also underscores the role of surrender, faith, and reliance on Jesus in allowing the Holy Spirit to work in and through the believer's life.

In conclusion, the one way for saints to call upon and evoke the various aspects of the Holy Spirit is through a deep and personal relationship with Jesus Christ. By surrendering our lives to Him, abiding in Him, and being filled with the Spirit, we can experience the transformative and empowering work of the Holy Spirit in our lives, enabling us to live a life that brings glory to God and reflects His divine attributes.
