I've been helping people polish their resumes for a while now, and I've noticed some common questions about hiring a resume writer. Let's dive into the essentials!
Do I Need a Resume Writer?
Consider hiring a resume writer if:
Hiring a professional resume writer can be a valuable investment if you're not familiar with what recruiters are looking for. Professional writers that have a recruitment background understand the key requirements that companies use to filter applications. Navigating the job market can be challenging, but a professional writer can ensure your resume aligns with job requirements, increasing your chances of passing through the initial screening.
Additionally, if you’re aiming for mid-level or higher roles, you may need a more polished and professional resume. Writers can help highlight your achievements, especially if you find it difficult to quantify or describe them in impactful ways. They are also invaluable for those who are uncomfortable with formatting tools like Microsoft Word or have complex employment histories, such as career changes or employment gaps. Lastly, if English is not your first language, a resume writer can refine your grammar and structure, ensuring that your message is clear and professional.
However, you might NOT need a resume writer if:
In some cases, hiring a resume writer may not be necessary. If your resume is already strong—clean, data-driven, and using a classic template—it may already be optimized for most job applications. For those in creative fields, a well-developed portfolio might carry more importance than the resume itself, making a resume writer less critical.
Additionally, if you’re applying directly and handing your resume to a potential employer in person, a simple and straightforward resume could be all you need. Similarly, internal promotions typically require less formality, making a detailed resume overhaul unnecessary. For recent graduates, entry-level resumes can often be crafted using free online templates, saving you the cost of a professional service.
Note: If you’re still not getting interviews, consider having your resume reviewed by a contractor who offers feedback at a lower cost.

Should I Choose a Resume Writing Service or an Independent Writer?
Resume writing services can be pricey, ranging from $250 to $2,000. Many of these companies act as middlemen, subcontracting the actual writing to independent writers who may, or may not, have recruitment experience (most don't). This means you might pay more for the same quality of work that an independent writer could offer for less.
Having worked in HR, recruiting, and workforce management consulting for the past 9 years before starting my own business, I can tell you that bigger doesn’t always mean better. Many large resume companies don’t vet their writers properly—they might not require certifications or review the writer’s work unless a client complains.
How Do I Choose the Right Resume Writer?
Whether you go with a service or an independent writer, ask these questions before committing:
What Does It Cost?
Typically, independent contractors charge $250 to $400, while companies may charge $350 to $500 or more. For this price range, you should expect:
Some caution against packages priced under $200, as they could indicate inexperience. However, in my case, the lower cost reflects an understanding that not everyone can afford $200, not a lack of skill. Similarly, higher prices don't always guarantee better quality.
Always ask questions to ensure you’re getting what you need.
Good luck with your resume journey!
