Hiring Mistakes: A Costly Lesson
Hiring the right person can be a game-changer. But hiring the wrong one? That's a disaster waiting to happen. This newsletter is inspired by my conversations with my clients who regretted hiring the wrong person — and the lessons they learned the hard way.
Have you ever hired someone who looked great on paper but was entirely wrong for the team?
When the Wrong Hire Disrupts Everything
Imagine this: You hire a team lead with an impressive resume. The person worked at top firms, had all the certifications, and talked a big game in interviews. But once they joined, you started noticing issues. They preferred to work in silos, resisted feedback, and refused to collaborate on client projects. Suddenly, your high-functioning team struggles with internal conflicts, project delays, and frustrated clients.
Or consider this scenario: You bring in a senior person to independently run a part of the big project with the team. It turns out that they are a superstar at execution but have zero patience for junior colleagues. Instead of mentoring and guiding, they dismiss questions and create a toxic environment. Your best team members start disengaging, and morale is at an all-time low before you know it.
Real-World Leadership Disasters
One firm hired a project lead who was brilliant at strategy but terrible at client interactions. They would dominate meetings, talk over clients, and ignore feedback. More importantly, they failed to pass on the deliverables correctly to his team. Within months, the clients started to show distrust and a lack of confidence; the weekly meetings between the client team and the firm became so stressful that the people involved didn't want to join the meeting. And all these - not because of poor work, but because the client lost confidence in the project lead.
Bad hiring decisions don't just affect teams—they can derail entire companies. Consider Uber under Travis Kalanick. His aggressive leadership style created a culture of toxicity, leading to scandals, employee protests, and his eventual ouster. The company had to spend years rebuilding its reputation.
Another classic example? JCPenney under Ron Johnson. Coming from Apple, he tried to transform the company overnight, eliminating long-standing discount strategies that customers loved. Sales plummeted, and JCPenney lost billions before reversing course.
These are prominent examples; however, there are many mini examples of such situations within a big company at several levels and projects. I commonly hear the phrase; my job is stressful, not because the people lack capability or acumen for the job at hand but because of generated complexities such as these.
The Ripple Effect of a Bad Hire
What Can We Learn?
"The cost of hiring someone bad is so much greater than missing out on someone good." – Joe Kraus.
