Is Hiring a Marketing Agency the Smarter Choice for Your Business?

Is Hiring a Marketing Agency the Smarter Choice for Your Business?

Glassdoor cites an average salary for a Marketing Manager in the UK as £44,538

Supported by Michael Page who state the average UK salary is £45,320 based on the leisure, travel and tourism industry (closest related to the events industry).

When you take into consideration statutory pension contribution, national insurance and the provision of work equipment, hardware, software licenses etc, this takes the cost to a business to circa £55,000 for a full-time employee.

Do you need a full time Marketing Manager?

If you asked your team to account for the hours spent on tasks they complete at work, we're sure you’d be surprised as to how much downtime and lack of productivity there is in a 40 hour week. Don’t get us wrong, some of this time socialising as a team and taking breaks isn’t a bad thing. But many who have transitioned from full-time roles to such positions are often surprised by how quickly tasks can be completed when the timer is on.

For comparison, based on an average agency day rate the cost of a full-time employee to a business would provide 3 days per week of work through an agency. We suggest that the tangible output wouldn’t be much less for the same cost.

Do the candidates you’re looking at have the full package?

The role of a Marketing Manager is extremely broad and varies hugely from company to company and industry to industry. We have seen Marketing Manager’s who are responsible for the delivery of all company events, internal communications, website design, business development, social media, digital marketing, photography, graphic design and even going to buy ice creams for the office under the guise of employee engagement!

Marketing is also continuing to change dramatically with the developments in technology, digital and new social media channels. It is unrealistic to expect one candidate to be an expert in all the areas of marketing. That said, a company can expect additional costs when it comes to the more creative areas including photography, videography and graphic design and the more technical, including web design and SEO.

However, by contracting an agency this is exactly what you’ll get, a team of experts who can define your marketing strategy and then execute it, all in house, led by one dedicated Account Manager.

When you review your full marketing spend: both employee cost and external expertise and productivity then we truly believe that the output from a specialist agency would equate to the same as an internal employee for the same cost.

Not sold yet – other pros to an agency!

  • You only pay for the work done, so if you know there are a few months where activity needs to be less and spend reduced you have this flexibility.
  • Agencies operate 52 weeks of the year, by using a team of experts annual leave can be covered to ensure activity doesn’t stop when someone is taking a much needed break.
  • By working with a range of companies, across different sectors there is a wealth of experience and knowledge that would be difficult to replicate with one candidate.
