According to Jobscan, many recruiters are reporting normal hiring trends, with one small caveat. All interviews are being done virtually, over the phone or via Skype.
Shami Marangwanda (Starbucks) told us, "We have adapted moving all interviews to remote. I would say business as almost usual for us."
Different industries have been hit differently throughout this time. While unemployment is climbing, many companies have an urgent or anticipated need to hire as things calm down in the coming months.
Samantha Harmon (Paladin) explained, "Lots of clients still moving processes forward and jobs that still need filling! Probably will see a lull but already hearing from a few companies that they'll need our support in hiring to mitigate the situation."
However, there are some roles that require in-person interviews. According to Charlene Hansen (Robert Half), "For managers/teams who have a hard and fast requirement for an in-person final interview, I anticipate there will be delays in the coming weeks as remote working requirements spread through other cities I work with, but as of this week, they moved forward."Sheltered In Place, But Hard to Pin Down
The majority of recruiters we heard from told us that they still have roles to fill. The problem is, despite being able to host virtual interviews, their clients have become less responsive.
Kristen Fife (TalentReach) said, "It is easier to connect with candidates but our clients are hard to pin down, interviews are difficult to schedule, and everyone is slowing everything down from a process perspective." What Should a Job Seeker Do?
Throughout the pandemic, each week seems to bring with it a new normal. The hiring world, too, is likely to fall into new normals as the coming weeks play out. As a job seeker, it's important to stay positive and get creative. For example, start looking for contract or remote positions, as the hiring for those positions are typically done virtually.
Now more than ever, an ATS-optimized resume will help you stand out. Emily Lawson (Career Transitions Consultant) suggested, "The best thing job seekers can do right now is make it easy for HR to quickly see how they are qualified by keeping their resume clean, relevant and easy to navigate."
Finally, make use of recruiters! They have the inside scoop on which jobs are available and can help you figure out what type of job is the best fit right now.
