Hiring and Firing Should Be Done The Same Way

Hiring and Firing Should Be Done The Same Way

More people than you think (in bigger positions than you think) don't even get a sit down with their boss when they start a new job.

This "sit down" should entail clearly defined goals and expectations.

When you decide to marry someone (hopefully) you have discussed your values, non-negotiables, ambitions, and expectations.

If you haven't...... woah nelly, that is going to be a tough marriage (to start at least). My wife the MFT can vouch.

When you start a job it is imperative that the hiring manager sit with their new employee and discuss with them their expectations and how the employee is going to live up to it.

This makes firing someone much less stressful, and the proof is in the pudding.

My dad always says, "I have never had to fire anyone.... they fire themselves."

What he means by this is during that sit down the new employee should write down how they are going to accomplish these goals, tasks, and live up to the expectations/standards of the hiring manager and the company.

And if they don't you can calmly approach them and show them the document and inquire "why the shortcomings?"

My dad has said he literally sees people look at the document and say, "Well I guess this job isn't for me."

Hiring and Firing both start with clarity

As my mentor says, "We don't lack motivation, we lack clarity.

Make sure it is clear to your employees what they are to be doing and what needs to be accomplished.

And if they are, and you have tried approaching them, and working with them, and it still doesn't work, it may be the easiest firing of your life.
