Hiring Essentials: Humble, Honest, and Hungry ??

When it comes to hiring, skills are important, but character is key. ?? In many cases, skills can be taught, but the right mindset and attitude are much harder to train. From my experience managing and hiring employees, I've learned that the best hires aren't always the ones with the most impressive resumes—they're the ones who bring the right attitude and drive to the table. ?? Here's a breakdown of the three H's I look for when hiring:
?
?1. Humble ??
Humility is often overlooked, but it's a crucial trait in any new hire. Being humble doesn't mean downplaying your abilities; it means being open to learning, helping where needed, and sharing success with the team. ??
?A humble employee:
- Acknowledges both their successes and failures. ??
- Takes feedback and praise in stride. ??
- Works well with others and stays open to new ideas. ??
- Knows how to communicate respectfully, even when right. ???
?How to spot humility during an interview:
- They use "we" instead of "I" when talking about team achievements. ??
- They listen to everyone, from the receptionist to the hiring manager. ??
- They wait for the interviewer to finish speaking before responding. ??
On the flip side, be cautious of candidates who interrupt, talk over others, or take all the credit for success while blaming others for failures. ???
2. Honest ??
Honesty is essential in the workplace, and a great hire should be someone who values integrity. Honest employees not only help maintain a trustworthy workplace but also give you honest feedback when needed. ??
?An honest employee:
- Holds themselves and others accountable. ?
- Gives constructive feedback, even if it's difficult to hear. ???
- Understands and respects the company’s expectations. ??

?How to ensure you're hiring honest employees:
- Involve your team in the hiring process—honesty recognizes honesty. ??
- Be upfront about the importance of integrity in your company values. ??
- Watch for red flags on resumes, like unexplained gaps or sudden job downgrades over time. ??
3. Hungry ??
The third H, hunger, is what sets apart those who are just there for a paycheck from those who are motivated to succeed. ?? A hungry employee is passionate about their role, eager to grow, and driven to contribute to the company's success. ??
A hungry employee:
- Is eager to learn and take on new challenges. ??
- Shows enthusiasm for the company's mission and values. ??
- Takes initiative and seeks out growth opportunities. ??
?
You can usually sense hunger during an interview—these candidates will express excitement for the role and their career. They’ll want to know how they can contribute and grow within your company. ??
?
Final Thoughts ??
?
The three H's—Humble, Honest, and Hungry—are key qualities that can make a huge difference in a hire. While technical skills can be trained, these character traits are harder to instill and are essential for long-term success. ??
