The decision by Louis Vuitton to hire?Pharrell Williams?as creative director for menswear is an essential lesson in inclusive leadership.?
By looking beyond the traditional boundaries of fashion and embracing the renowned singer-songwriter-rapper-producer-designer-philanthropist, Louis Vuitton showcased their commitment to innovation, pioneer spirit, and entrepreneurship.
Chairman and CEO Pietro Beccari said that "Pharrell's creative vision beyond fashion will certainly lead Louis Vuitton towards a new and very exciting chapter."?
Leaders can learn from this example that embracing different perspectives allows for novel ideas to be explored and helps drive growth.?
This decision set a powerful example for other corporate leaders to follow when attempting to stay competitive and succeed within their respective marketplaces.
Examples of companies embracing different perspectives to stay competitive and successful
A great example is Spotify, who made a bold move in April 2021 when they named former Barack Obama advisor and private equity advisor?Mona Sutphen?as a member of the Spotify board of directors. This decision was seen as a way for the company to diversify its leadership team, bringing in a fresh perspective from outside the tech industry.
?Similarly, Uber hired Bozoma Saint John as its?Chief Brand Officer in 2017. Saint John had previously worked at Apple Music, PepsiCo and Beats, and her hiring was seen as an effort to improve Uber's public image after several scandals. In addition, her experience with marketing and branding helped her bring a new perspective to the company's leadership team.
These examples demonstrate how corporate leaders recognize the value of embracing different perspectives to stay ahead of the competition. By bringing in people from diverse backgrounds and experiences, companies can gain valuable insights that can help them make better decisions and remain competitive in today's business environment.
Valuable lessons?
Organizations can learn valuable lessons from hiring for culture add instead of just looking for culture fit. By taking this approach, organizations can add value to their existing culture through addition and expansion rather than simply replicating the same kind of people with similar backgrounds or views.?
In addition, this creates an environment with greater cultural diversity, which can help break down barriers of bias and exclusion in the workplace.
Hiring for culture add also helps an organization build a more equitable team that is better equipped to understand and serve a wide variety of needs - both inside and outside the organization.?
To foster a truly inclusive workplace, it's essential to recognize that not everyone has the same experiences and perspectives. This is why hiring for culture add can be a valuable way to amplify diversity, equity, and inclusion.

1 年The move appears to demonstrate a sound, yet familiar business strategy to expand the LV customer base. Hip-hop has been influencing fashion - most industries- for decades. Bottom line it sells products! Need proof, listen to commercial ads - sampling of hip-hop, rap, R&B. The free advertising & brand endorsements by industry celebrities, social media influencers, and reality tv personalities shouldn’t be overlooked nor underestimated either. Whenever an industry from movies to sports needs a fresh look or reviving, they diversify. The real story is where LV does not appear to be diversifying. There is no target year for POC, only a percentage and no inclusion of pay equity. Kudos for a disability inclusion target year. https://www.lvmh.com/group/lvmh-commitments/social-environmental-responsibility/diversity-inclusion/ https://www.lvmh.com/group/about-lvmh/governance/executive-committee/
