Is Hiring a Coach Worth the Investment? (and Do I Need One?)

Is it Worth the Money to Invest in a Coach?

There’s a ton of free information online, including blogs written by thought leaders and YouTube channels full of tips on how to do just about anything. Can’t you commit to a study schedule and improve your skills on your own? The answer is yes and no.

As the author of six books on leadership and talent, I can say without a doubt that becoming a great leader or achieving a goal such as learning to fly a plane cannot be achieved simply by reading a book. To master certain skills, you need to apply your learning in real-time.

That’s not to say that you can’t improve on your own. However, if getting somewhere sooner rather than later is essential to you, then investing in a coach makes sense.

Working with an experienced coach can:

1. Help you identify what’s getting in your way and help you find the motivation to move forward.
2. Challenge your assumptions; help you think more broadly.
3. Identify ways to exploit your strengths and minimize or eliminate your weaknesses.

9. Provide an outside perspective that you cannot get on your own.

When a Coach is Not Worth the Investment

1. You’re not open to change.
2. Someone else thinks you need a coach, and you disagree.
3. You’re convinced you have all the answers.
4. You view the coaching fee as a cost and not an investment.
5. You know it all and have nothing to learn.
6. You believe you’re the smartest person in the room.
7. You’re looking for a quick fix.
8. You’re not convinced coaching really works.
9. You’re not willing to carve out the time needed to improve.
10. You think you should have a coach because your friends all have coaches.
11. You’re going to be fired next week unless you can turn things around.
12. You’re perfectly fine with the way others perceive you.
13. You’re not willing to be vulnerable.
14. You want someone to listen to your problems.
15. You need to acquire a specialized skill.
