Thanks Robyn and Emily for the important conversation!!! I appreciate you speaking about the challenges of observing Jewish holidays in the workplace. Being Jewish is beyond the religion for many, including myself. A recent Pew study noted, "only 1 in 10 Americans that identify as Jewish cite religion as the only part of what it means to be Jewish." As you mention, "we are talking in the context of a very Christian society." Within that society, being Jewish doesn't fit neatly. I think Yair Rosenberg speaks to this tension well in their article for The Atlantic earlier this year, "...well-meaning people have trouble fitting Jews into their usual boxes. They don’t know how to define Jews, and so they resort to their own frames of reference, like “race” or “religion,” and project them onto the Jewish experience. But Jewish identity doesn’t conform to Western categories, despite centuries of attempts by society to shoehorn it in." https://newsletters.theatlantic.com/deep-shtetl/61f992de9277230021ae11f7/are-jews-a-race-whoopi-goldberg-holocaust/ Thanks to you both and to Hirewell for acknowledging Jewish American Heritage and prompting the discussion.
