Name and Current Job Title:
Harry Parker, Senior Project Manager at Cancer Research UK.
Did you experience any challenges with your job search, prior to attending the London Job Show?
I had spoken to a number of recruiters on the phone before attending the job show, but often was put forward for jobs which didn’t suit my interests or were not a good fit for my skills and experience. I attended a couple of interviews for roles that weren’t quite right for me and had started to be concerned that my career was heading in the wrong direction.
Why did you decide to attend the London Job Show?
I’ve had good experiences previously attending job shows as they give an opportunity to have informal conversations about roles and these conversations can often open your mind to opportunities that you might not have thought about before. I attended the event as it was local to where I live and, although I didn’t expect it to lead directly to a job, I thought it would give me the motivation to reinvigorate my search.
What position were you hired for at the event?
Senior Project Manager at Cancer Research UK.
What attracted you to your current employer and what do you like about working for them?
I was impressed by the key role technology plays across CRUK and the wide range of projects taking place in the organisation. The friendliness and positivity of the team was also refreshing after having worked in the commercial sector for several years. Added to that, it is a convenient location for me, plus the fact that everyone in the organisation is contributing towards the fight against cancer gives added motivation.
What would you say to a Job Seeker considering attending the London Job Show?
If you’re unsure, go! Talk to the representatives at the stands, even if you hadn’t previously thought about working for them, and find out about their organisations and available roles. Just have an open conversation - there’s no pressure, and you never know where that conversation could lead!
