In 3 days, the #HIT world will descend upon @Orlando for #HIMSS19. This being my 3rd, I am absolutely excited to connect with old friends, make new ones and discover trends/stories that speak to ideas that make a difference in the experience and delivery of healthcare.
My quick tips: (for what it's worth)
1) Get Engaged- Don’t be afraid to connect, reach out and make new friends. Remember, this is a GLOBAL conference. Find people from other countries and learn how they're disrupting healthcare! More importantly, stay connected. Make a point to reach out after the conference.
2) Be Curious- Yes, it’s overwhelming with humanity but the organizers have done a great job creating amazing tracts that would fit anyone’s quest for knowledge. Find one and don’t be afraid to deviate from it. Look for the big idea that you can take back home and make an impact.
3) Find Yourself a Group- 3 years ago I met the #pinksocks and it’s been a phenomenal group to meet every year. Their messages of being #trulyhuman, #empathy and reminding everyone about the lives of those we are trying to help.
4) Look for patient stories- It’s easy to get caught up in all the latest and greatest, but look for those who matter. Who have a voice!
5) Think Inclusion + Diversity- Introduce yourselves to any of the rising stars in #HIT. Read this article https://www.healthcareittoday.com/2019/02/05/a-week-of-women-at-himss19/ and make it a point to see what you can learn from them.
6) FIND Your Voice at HIMSS- get on social media and tweet (my handle is @MPETERSEN_MD, yes, a shameless plug), FB, Instagram #HIMSS19. You’ll be surprised about what you’ll learn and where to be.
