Greetings Logistics Aficionados..! We meet after almost a month, but we meet at a good time. The Union Budget 2023 is going to be out in a few hours and it will most probably mean many good things for India's logistics and supply chain industry. The Union Budget 2023-24, would be tabled at the Parliament on February 1, 2023. In light of the same, the Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman,?in November,?chaired a week-long pre-budget consultation meeting virtually with stakeholder groups including representatives and experts from the agriculture and agro-processing industry; infrastructure, and climate change; financial sector and capital markets; services and trade; social sector; trade unions and labor organizations,?and economists.

Supply chain leaders and air cargo experts had depicted a positive outlook for the industry in 2023, but also suggested to remain prudent when it comes to volumes, yields and revenue, in light of the existing global circumstances. They acknowledged that air cargo might not be able to achieve performance levels witnessed in the last couple of years.

Two Major ports in Chennai exported 3.64 lakh vehicles in 2022

During the Calendar year 2022, the two major ports in Chennai?collectively facilitated the export of almost 3.64 lakh vehicles to various countries, recording an increase of 26% year-on-year. While Chennai Port Trust (ChPT) exported 2.23 lakh cars, mostly those made by Hyundai Motor India, against 1.65 lakh units in CY21, Kamarajar Port Ltd. (KPL) shipped 1.41 lakh vehicles (1.25 lakh).

Suez Canal: Another blockage reported, trade traffic delays seeable

MV Glory-a bulk cargo vessel carrying grain from Ukraine ran aground in the Suez Canal on Monday before being refloated, officials informed adding that the incident can result in some delays to trade traffic in the Egyptian waterway. The vessel ran aground near the city of Qantara, the shipping firm Leth Agencies said. While the cause of this grinding halt is still unknown, it is to be noted that parts of Egypt — especially the northern provinces — were reeling under a wave of bad weather on Sunday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while virtually inaugurating the 7th edition of ‘Invest Madhya Pradesh-Global Investors Summit’, said that the Indian economy has 'strong macroeconomic fundamentals and is expected to be among the fastest growing in the elite G-20 grouping.?Addressing the two-day summit, the PM hailed India as an 'attractive destination for investment'.?

12 Major ports of India report 9% increase in traffic handled in April-December period

The 12 major ports of India have seen a 9 per cent increase in traffic handled, y-o-y, for the April – December period. The total cargo handled include 576.63 million tonnes for the period under review. As per data from the Indian Ports Association, cargo handling in the year ago period stood at 529 mt. Increase in traffic came on the back of a 35 per cent rise in thermal coal handling, followed by an increase in coking coal handling, which increased by over 16 per cent y-o-y to 43.25 mt.\

All about India's first mega transshipment container port at Great Nicobar Islands

India may soon get its first mega container transhipment port at the Galathea Bay, in Great Nicobar Islands, and according to officials at the Syama Prasad Mookherjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK), an Expression of Interest (EoI) for the same is expected to be floated by January-end. This would present India with exciting avenues considering that currently all international container cargo has to go to Colombo, Singapore and Port Klang in Malaysia.

AP Moller-Maersk and DP World come together to decarbonize logistics

AP Moller-Maersk and DP World Jebel Ali Port have entered a long-term partnership where both parties will collaborate on various aspects of service delivery and work towards a common goal of decarbonizing logistics and serving their customers better. The long-term strategic partnership will give priority berthing for Maersk vessels, support for Maersk’s customers, and implement new processes to improve quayside productivity, all leading to faster gate turnaround times at Jebel Ali Port and reduced bunker fuel consumption.

The several initiatives undertaken by the government like production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes and abolishing archaic laws and compliances, have placed India as a crucial destination for companies to expand their supply chain footprint, communications, IT and railways minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said. During a discussion at the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2023 in Davos, Vaishnaw said “people want effective and resilient supply chains,” adding that cost efficiency is “no longer the sole factor for the supply chains to be differentiated.”

Pakistan's economic situation has gone from bad to worse. As a result, foreign shipping lines are unable to get the remittance for freight charges with a shortage of dollar at Pakistan's ports. Shipping agents have warned the Pakistani government that their exports could come at a halt in light of the present situation as foreign shipping lines may stop their services. Pakistan's shipping sector was already suffering due to economic ups and downs.

Amazon enables even faster deliveries, launches Amazon Air in India

Amazon India yesterday announced the launch of Amazon Air in India to further enhance its transportation network and enable faster deliveries to customers in the country. Amazon will utilise the complete cargo capacity of a Boeing 737-800 aircraft that will be operated by Quikjet Cargo Airlines Private Limited. Amazon is the first e-commerce company in India to partner with a third-party air carrier to provide a dedicated air cargo network.?
