Highly Sensitive? Why It's NOT Your Superpower – Or a Weakness

Highly Sensitive? Why It's NOT Your Superpower – Or a Weakness

?? LAST CHANCE: Doors for the final RESILIENT cohort of 2024 closes tomorrow, September 18th at 11:59pm ET. Program begins on Thursday. Only 3 spots left! Secure yours now!

You've been sold a lie about sensitivity in the workplace. Twice.

First, you were told you it was a weakness. You probably heard these things more times than you can count:

  • Don't take things so personally
  • You need to grow a thicker skin
  • Leave your emotions at the door

Then came the overcorrection: "Embrace your sensitivity! It's your superpower!" In fact, I've been guilty of saying this myself!

But now after coaching Sensitive Strivers (highly sensitive high-achievers) for over a decade, I can tell you...

Both of these perspectives are dangerously oversimplified.

See, your sensitivity is neither inherently good nor bad. It's not a flaw to overcome, nor is it a magical superpower that automatically grants you success. It's a neutral, biological trait—like having blue eyes or being double jointed.

Think of your sensitivity more as a high-performance tool. In untrained hands, it can be overwhelming, even debilitating. But used skillfully? Then it can become a career-defining asset.

Take the story of our RESILIENT graduate, Janice, a Director of Analytics. When she joined the program, Janice had spent two years feeling as if she was driving a Ferrari with no brakes.

Her sensitivity, drive, and deep care for her work were powerful engines, propelling her to spearhead big projects and exceed targets quarter after quarter.?But she often found herself careening from one crisis to another.

Work consumed her thoughts, her conversations, her dreams. It defined her entirely.

No matter how hard she worked, Janice wasn't happy or proud. It never felt like enough. She was caught in an exhausting cycle of overworking and overthinking that led to burnout.

Here's the counterintuitive truth Janice discovered…?

Her sensitivity wasn't something to beat herself up over, which would have only added on layers of shame and spiraled her further into self-sabotage.

The solution also wasn't to wear being sensitive as badge of honor while remaining stuck, accepting it as an unchangeable part of her identity.

Instead, she started looking at her wiring strategically. It wasn't "just who she was" anymore. It became a tool she could learn to use better.

This new mindset was a game-changer for Janice.

She started using her keen awareness to spot what her team needed before they even asked, without taking on all their stress.

Her drive, which used to keep her up at night overthinking, now fueled her to get things done efficiently.

And her empathy? It helped her build rock-solid relationships at work, but now without sacrificing her own needs in the process.

Through the coaching, tools, and strategies inside RESILIENT , Janice was able to:?

?? Gain control over her emotions, staying calm and composed even in tense conversations

?? Assertively share her ideas during important presentations

?? Confidently set limits around extra work without feeling guilt

?? Navigate office politics intelligently while keeping her integrity intact

By working on her sensitivity like you'd work on any other skill – practicing, refining, adjusting – Janice was able to turn it into her secret weapon at work, going on to secure a promotion.

Most of all, she went from feeling like her sensitivity was controlling her to being the one in control, using it purposefully to excel in her career.

You're a Ferrari, Not a Sedan

Now, let's talk about you. It's time to see yourself for what you truly are: a high-performance machine, not some run-of-the-mill sedan.

Think of your sensitivity like a Ferrari's responsiveness. It's not a flaw – it's what sets you apart. You wouldn't dull a Ferrari's capabilities, would you? Of course not. You'd learn to drive it expertly.

Similarly, your ability to spot subtle trends, read team dynamics, and grasp client needs isn't a weakness. It's your edge – but ONLY once you know how to harness it effectively, just like mastering a high-performance vehicle.

Right now, you might feel like you're careening through your career with more power than you know how to handle. The slightest bump sends you spinning. The ups and downs of the workplace feels deafening. Every emotion hits you like you're going from 0 to 60 in seconds.

But here's the thing: That responsiveness, that power, that speed of processing – it's all part of your high-performance engine. The problem isn't the engine. It's that no one ever taught you how to drive.

Imagine if you could:

  • Use your emotional responsiveness to navigate office politics with finesse, not fear
  • Channel your overthinking into deep, strategic problem-solving
  • Leverage your attention to detail to spot trends and opportunities others overlook, positioning you as a visionary
  • Fine-tune your intuition, transforming gut feelings into data-backed decisions that earn you respect and influence

This is just a small glimpse what it means to drive your Ferrari expertly. It's not about changing who you are. It's about mastering your inherent capabilities.

Janice and over 400 other RESILIENT alumni prove that being a deep-thinking, feeling leader is a powerful asset…?

When you know how to leverage it.

This nuanced distinction has a strong effect, Melody. It runs parallel to what I’ve uncovered over the years about empathy - where striking a balance across several dimensions ends up being the sweet spot of effectiveness.

Interesting distinction and I resonate with the stance of nearly anything being inherently neutral. Perhaps it's a superpower contextually and more about self-trust than amplifying labels.
