'By highlighting and celebrating the achievements of women, we are creating visible role models' - Women in Tech - International Women's Day

By highlighting and celebrating the achievements of women, we are creating visible role models and facilitating an opportunity to inspire future generations.

What do you do and how is tech relevant to your role?

When people ask what I do and I tell them that I am a financial services regulatory lawyer, I am sure that tech is not always the first thing that comes to mind!?However, technology is fast evolving and is changing the landscape for financial services.

This has been a key focus of regulators globally, with the UK financial regulators recently considering the impact of the increased use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in financial services and the Financial Conduct Authority considering the potential competition impacts of Big Tech entry and expansion in retail financial services (see more on that here).?

As a result, tech is relevant as we help clients to navigate the complexities of the regulatory regime in the context of the developments in this space.

?

What does International Women's Day mean to you?

For me, International Women’s Day gives an opportunity to pause, recognise and celebrate the amazing achievements of women around the world.?By highlighting and celebrating the achievements of women, we are creating visible role models and facilitating an opportunity to inspire future generations.

?

What trends are you seeing in the tech space?

Tech is increasingly important and relevant to financial services, and so it is expected to be a key theme for the year ahead.?

Across the world, regulators are considering and developing new rules and guidelines focused on how to adapt to the evolving use of technology in the sector and to address the novel challenges and opportunities that it presents.?

In the UK, the shaping of digital markets is a focus in the FCA’s strategy for 2022 to 2025, and therefore more is to be expected from the financial regulators in the months to come.

?

And what are your predictions for the future?

In just a few years, technology has fundamentally changed the way that we live our day-to-day lives. It has given us access to a wealth of information at our fingertips, improved our access to health data, given us extensive means to communicate with each other and has materially changed the way that we access financial services.?

For financial services in particular, artificial intelligence/machine learning, operational resilience, ESG and competition will no doubt continue to be key themes for the year ahead, and I am looking forward to considering the developments as they unfold!
