Highlight Reel from the Week

I was driving to a meeting early this morning as the sun came up and I thought… what a week! Decided to share my Top 3 gratitudes…

* My son -- for asking us to make a video with our parenting advice before his baby arrives. (Report card grade issuance, baby!) THANK YOU @austinbraksick for knowing that none of us have all the answers—and that we all have much to learn from prior generations and each other!??

* Duke University-- who announced they were going with 100% random housing assignments beginning with the Class of 2020. Cheers @duke.edu for breaking the ‘have it your way’ trend and ensuring your students benefit from the diversity of their community and world.

* Ed Stack -- who showed bold leadership and actively caring by announcing Dick’s Sporting Goods would remove all assault-style guns from its stores; ban the sale of high capacity magazines and will raise the minimum age of gun buyers to 21 in all states. He went on to “implore” other elected officials to support common sense gun reform including a ban of assault-style firearms. Other bigger companies including WalMart and Kroger quickly followed, but Ed was the real leader here and it matters. Grateful for hometown hero Ed Stack @dickssportinggoods.com for not just caring with words-- but actively caring with decisive, principled actions.  Dick’s was founded in my childhood hometown of Binghamton NY by Ed’s father Dick—with a $300 loan from his grandmother—and now boasts revenue of almost $8B and is headquartered in my hometown of Pittsburgh.

In a time when people question if we will ever see leaders the likes of which our nation has seen in the past, cheers to you who take purposeful actions on important matters within you sphere of influence.  While the impact may not be seen until you are well into your next season, keep making a difference. It matters.
