Higher education minister: Malaysia’s first AI faculty to be launched on May 10
Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir announced that the nation's inaugural Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is set to be inaugurated on May 10th.
He mentioned that the symbolic inauguration is scheduled to take place at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL), with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim anticipated to preside over the event.
"In its preliminary phase, the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence commenced at UTM (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia), alongside consortiums involving other universities."
“But for this initial stage, we want to make the faculty truly a high-quality faculty with expertise from other universities joining in to ensure the success of establishing this faculty,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters after officiating the launch of the 2024 Jom Masuk U (JMU) Programme at the Universiti Teknologi Mara Seri Iskandar branch campus here today.

Zambry was previously reported to have said that for a start, the Higher Education Committee (JKPT) had approved the AI Bachelor’s Degree programme in January and that the programme’s first cohort would begin their studies in October.
He mentioned that the development of AI and its curriculum has been carefully tailored to meet industrial demands, involving expertise from the AI field and aligned with the National Artificial Intelligence Roadmap 2021-2025 initiated by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti).
Meanwhile, Zambry stated that the JMU 2024 aims to disseminate information about educational programs offered by higher learning institutions under the ministry, including public universities, private institutions, polytechnics, community colleges, and Public Skills Training Institutions (ILKA).
He further elaborated that the JMU 2024 will be conducted across 10 zones, encompassing venues such as Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, UiTM branches in Sabah and Sarawak, and Universiti Malaysia Perlis, starting today until June 9. — Bernama
