Higher Education Enrolment Surpasses 4 Crore Mark

The enrolment in higher education has reached an all-time high of 4.14 crore, crossing the four crore mark for the first time in India's history.

The All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) data released by the Government of India has reported a whopping 7.5% increase in student enrolment in higher studies in 2020-21 compared to 2019-20. UP, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, MP, Karnataka and Rajasthan are the top six states regarding the number of students enrolled.

The enrolment in higher education has reached an all-time high of 4.14 crore, crossing the four crore mark for the first time in India's history. AISHE is an annual publication by the MoE, Government of India which provides comprehensive information on various aspects of higher education in the country, such as enrolment, teachers, infrastructure, etc.?

Factors Attributed to Increase in Enrollments?

1. Increased Access to Education

The Indian government has taken several initiatives to improve access to education, including establishing new colleges and universities. According to the AISHE report 2021, there has been a 70% increase in the number of universities and a 53% increase in the number of colleges in 2020–-21 compared to 2019–-20.?

AISHE reported that private institutions account for approximately 62% of total higher educational institutions in the country. The number of scholarships offered by the government and private organizations has increased, making it easier for students from economically weaker sections to pursue higher education. According to the Ministry of Education, the number of scholarships provided by the government to students increased by 10% in 2020-21 compared to the previous year.?


4. Stern Focus on Skill Development

To meet the demand for skilled workers, the Indian government has increased its focus on skill development. This has led to an increase in the enrollment of students in vocational and technical courses, with AISHE reporting a 10.3% increase in the number of students enrolled in vocational courses in 2020-21 compared to the previous year.?
