High Turnover in HR Signals Need for Investment in People Management
A recent report by Paycor highlights the challenges faced by HR departments, with nearly half of HR professionals having been in their roles for two years or less. This high turnover rate coincides with C-suite executives increasingly relying on HR for leadership development, citing "lack of HR support" and "outdated performance management systems" as key reasons for ineffective management.
The survey of over 7,000 professionals revealed that employees with shorter tenure at a company were more likely to seek new opportunities and less likely to view their leaders favorably. This emphasizes the critical role HR plays in fostering effective leadership and driving employee engagement and retention, regardless of the work environment.
Effective leadership was found to be a strong predictor of company performance, with employees at high-performing companies receiving more productive feedback and expressing greater inspiration from senior leaders. However, HR professionals and risk managers identified ineffective leadership as a major people risk, contributing to inadequate succession planning, underutilization of skills, and negative company culture.
This disconnect between leadership perception and employee experience is further highlighted by a Right Management report, revealing that leaders often overestimate engagement and loyalty, especially among mid-career and middle-layer employees.
The challenges faced by managers, including burnout due to disruptive change, are also contributing factors. Gallup researchers suggest that trust and communication are crucial for leaders to effectively navigate change and maintain engagement.
These findings underscore the need for organizations to invest in robust HR support and leadership development programs. By addressing the high turnover rate within HR and providing resources for effective leadership development, companies can foster a positive work environment, improve employee retention, and ultimately drive better business results.
