High School students visit FLSmidth R&D facilities at Dania

FLSmidth is not only about our customers (Sorry!). We also take many steps to interact and assist in the learning experience of young people around the world. From the collaboration with Helwan University in Cairo, to the intake of interns from the Danish Technical University - DTU and Copenhagen Business School - CBS, we aim to engage young people during their education, take advantage of their input with fresh eyes , while teaching them important lessons about how to apply the knowledge they acquire during their studies. After all - We will rely on these young people in the future!

On Tuesday our Dania Facility was host to a High School class with "A-level" physics. A group from the class had previously won the Young Scientists competition, which is sponsored by FLSmidth, and as part of that was also awarded a trip to our state of the art facilities, to learn more about the impact cement is having on the world, particularly from a climate and sustainability perspective.

Split into 4 teams, the students heard about reducing CO2 emissions per ton of cement by looking at optimizing raw material use, substituting the clinker proportion in the cement or burning alternative fuels such as household waste or sewage sludge, to reduce the use of fossil fuels. One team headed to nearby FLSmidth Airloq to learn more about flue gas emissions and analysis.

Following an introduction all the teams worked on theoretical and practical exercises, before finally presenting their newly acquired knowledge to their class mates. As the day came to an end, they expressed gratitude for the visit (maybe also for getting a day off from the books) and are hopefully taking valuable insights with them back to share with friends and family.
