High School Science Teacher's Special Edition: The Story of the Atom

I've always found it difficult to explain "The Atom" it is this elusive particle that is both extremely tiny and extremely powerful. It is especially difficult to understand if your students are still in that "concrete operational" phase of mental capacity. Nevertheless, attached is the video; below are the lessons I've learned while making it.

The Story of the Atom in 30 minutes.

  1. Sadly this first version is long for a video lecture. I'd recommend chunking it into 10 minutes segments as appropriate. It's best to find a natural stopping point by topic rather than by time. So moderate how deep you dive into a topic.
  2. Include your face if possible. I'm happy that I was able to get good audio, but I have only one nice camera. So I decided to focus on the notes rather than myself. But if you are marketing your classes, you may want the exposure.
  3. Keep it interactive. In this particular model, I decided to record because my 4 year old son is very disruptive. Nevertheless, I still recorded opportunities to make comments in the chat. I was also successful at giving students a chance to go online and find additional content that I can scaffold in later.

As we all work our way through distance learning, I encourage you to keep experimenting with different styles and approaches.
