High-Profile Jan. 6 Rioters Remain in Jail Pending Trial

WASHINGTON -- Some of the most highly visible insurrectionists during the Jan. 6 invasion of the Capitol building remain in jail this week after losing court pleas that sought their release as they await trial.

One of them is Jacob Chansley, 33, also known as the "QAnon Shaman," who federal prosecutors said was a threat to the public after he entered the Capitol with a spear attached to a flagpole. He also reportedly spoke in a loud voice about getting rid of traitors in government.

After entering the Senate chamber, he allegedly left a note for Vice President Mike Pence that said, "It’s only a matter of time, justice is coming."

Chansley’s attorney denied he carried a spear. He said it was an ornament on top of the flagpole.

A motion filed by prosecutors in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia said, "He cannot be trusted now to suddenly change course."

In another case, the man photographed putting his feet on the desk of the House Speaker Nancy Pelosi argued that he was not trying to harm anyone when he entered the Capitol.

Richard Barnett, 60, of Gravette, Arkansas, faces charges of entering and remaining on restricted grounds, violent entry and theft of public property.

He claims he knocked politely on Pelosi’s office door but was pushed inside by other rioters. He admitted he left what he called a "nasty note" on the desk.

As Judge Christopher R. Cooper ordered that he remain in jail, Barnett reportedly yelled that the ruling was “not fair.”

“Everybody else who did things much worse are already home,” Barnett said.
