THE HIGH PRICE OF TOO MUCH SCREEN TIME

THE HIGH PRICE OF TOO MUCH SCREEN TIME

ARE WE HOOKED?

Hal found himself grabbing for his device at home in the evening, before going to bed and first thing in the morning.

Hal had a solo practice but he was hooked on his device, but he is not alone.

As a culture, we are constantly hooked on something.

We can binge-watch our favorite shows, scroll through social media, or indulge in our guilty pleasures.?

But why do we need to constantly bury ourselves in our devices, and how is this shaping our lives, our families, and work at the office?

For Hal, his devices have become a comfort and, replaced social connections.

Why are we so dependent?

We depend on our devices for time, weather, music, and social interaction.

THEY ARE SMARTER THAN US

Corporations spend millions of dollars hiring the most brilliant minds to make sure that our devices are addictive.

These creators invent ways to ensure we get a rush of dopamine which is extremely addictive for many of us.

Dopamine is?a chemical released in our brains that makes us feel good

They have created ways to constantly bombard us with notifications, updates, and new information that gives us a hit of dopamine but then our body craves more and more.?

We pick up our phone, we click on something and we descend down the rabbit hole. Hours pass by, and we wonder where the time has gone.

Even after realizing how much time we've wasted, we still struggle to put our phones down.

Focusing on important matters in our lives becomes increasingly difficult.

Let's face it, no matter where we go people are glued to their devices, in the doctors office, in the grocery store, in restaurants, at work and at home.

People may feel they depend on their devices for:

? Entertainment

? Social connection

? Information and knowledge

? The news

? Connection with the outside world

? Sense of belonging

? A dependable standby when depressed or anxious or lonely

FAMILIES HAVE BECOME STRANGERS

Family interactions evolved from sitting on the porch or the sitting room after dinner to sitting in front of the television to now everyone is off in their rooms on their devices.

Families have become like roommates.

Everyone is lonely and addicted to their devices.

It is important that we remember that our devices are not a replacement for human connection.

MINIMAL FACE-TO-FACE AT THE OFFICE

We don't want technology to replace face-to-face interactions with friends, family, and colleagues, or staff at your law firm.

In law firms, many partners barely speak to their staff, shooting off emails day after day when their team is just a few feet away.

I coach my clients to have at least one face-to-face meeting weekly.

THE HIGH COST OF OUR DEPENDENCE ON OUR DEVICES

The instant gratification we receive from our devices for news, entertainment, and social interaction at the touch of a button makes it difficult to be patient when doing a brief or demand.

What does it cost us?

  • Reduced productivity.
  • Poor relationships at work, home and with friends
  • Mental health problems. anxiety, depression
  • Physical health problems.

BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF

I've heard a saying that, "Denial is not a river in Egypt."

Do a 24-hour test.

  1. Get a clean sheet of paper and put the date on the paper.?
  2. Put a tick mark for each time you pick up your device to check social media, surf the Internet, check the news, or use or escape to your device for any reason.
  3. After 24 hours, review your sheet. You can hide these facts from others but not from yourself.

Like any other addiction, being addicted to your device can negatively impact every area of our lives.

HAL GETS HONEST WITH HIMSELF

Hal, had to admit after doing the 24-hour test, that he was on his device day and night.

I helped Hal to identify his addiction or behavior that compromised his income, his family relationships as well as his mental and physical health.?

Lawyers, like Hal, hire me to help them to overcome any addiction that is ruining their lives.

Although it was not easy, Hal detoxed from his addiction. He enjoyed improved focus, an organized law practice, enhanced enthusiasm and creativity, improved relationships at work and home, less stress, and more money.

For many, it is impossible to conquer these difficulties alone.

I can coach you how you can have an organized, fulfilling and profitable law practice with improved relationships at home.

Too much screen time robs us from what matters. This means precious time with our family and loved ones. Technology will always be there but our loved ones will not. Thank you for sharing?????? Pamela DeNeuve

Oh so true! Was just having this conversation with a client. She wanted to get organized and have better discipline but she was using her phone to manage her time. While I think there are some benefits there are also issues with this due to the money invested in keeping us distracted. Great article! Mindfulness helps us create discipline.
