High power pulsers for radiography application
ITHPP designed and developped two so-called 'conventional' generators using a high voltage Marx at 4.3MV and a Pulse Forming Shaping Water Line (PFL) for flash radiography applications,?to improve the hydrodynamic testing capabilities of the Atomic Weapon Establishment (UK). This facility, which is part of the Franco-British TEUTATES program, will enable research and development activities to be carried out.
These two generators?power a Plasma Filled Road Pinch Diode (PFRP) to provide two ultra-bright X-ray sources installed on two radiography x-ray axes separated?by a 45° angle.
In order to meet the customer's requirements, especially in terms of ergonomics and maintenance time, the installation was designed and manufactured with a small special feature. The tank of each of the generators is equipped with a hydraulically operated side door under which the Marx generator can slide in a motorized manner and be suspended for easy assembly and maintenance. Each of the machines is remotely controlled. Another important feature is the SF6, which is generally used in high-voltage generators and known as the best gas insulator to date but particularly polluting, has been banned.
