High Performance and Illness

In the film Limitless, Robert De Niro's business mogul character said 'You don't get sick! You're playing at this level and you get hit by a f***ing car, you don't even die.'
And this week scientists were encouraging people to take time to rest when they're ill, to avoid getting long COVID.
This week I'm recovering from COVID and haven't written this week's newsletter.* Shocking!
It made me think more about high performance and illness.
What do we expect from ourselves and from other people when it comes to illness?
As I now realise, the smart thing to do would have been to have a backup newsletter written, ready for emergencies.
So what do you do when you're ill?
Here's a poll I've set up on LinkedIn asking this question.
This anonymous poll's options are:
1. I'm with Robert De Niro, at this level you don't get sick. I power through it.
2. I rest when I'm ill and get back to work when I'm better.
3. I have smart systems in place, so it doesn't matter if I'm absent for any reason.
4. I can't believe there's no newsletter this week! Unsubscribe me immediately!
What do you think?
Here's the poll link again ...
Til next week!
Tara
*Thanks to Amanda Watts for suggesting I send out the poll as a stand-in for my newsletter.

2 年In my opinion Tara Halliday, none of us are indispensable, although the thought of having an office system smart enough to keep us connected , in all circumstances, does sound appealing. In some cases, I suspect the fear of senior executives absenting themselves from work, for whatever reason, is a temporary loss of control and/or power. For less senior executives, much may depend upon the quality of the line management, #organisationalculture, technological advancement, maturity of #continuity planning, and the degree of team #empowerment to make decisions in their absence. The critical question to ask oneself is "do I feel safe enough to take sick leave?", to which I'd very much hope that the answer is "yes".
