High interest for High Temperature Heat Pumps

Record high interest for HTHPs at High-Temperature Heat Pump Symposium . More than 400 participants gathered for a 2 day symposium in Copenhagen, underpinning the importance of HTHPs for decarbonising the industry, replacing the fossil fuels, most often applied for heat delivery today. The event was organised by Teknologisk Institut , DTU - Technical University of Denmark , SINTEF Energy Research and European Heat Pump Association .

Personally, I lead a panel discussion entitiled "Refrigerants – Which is the safer choice?" Pros and cons of natural refrigerants (CO2, NH3, hydrocarbons, water, and their mixtures) versus fluorinated refrigerants. The choice depends on a variety of considerations related to energy efficiency, safety, cost, environmental concerns related to GWP, PFAS/TFA, importance of the precautionary principle, among others. Most important is the important role that HTHPs can and will play in decarbonisation of the industry. Predicted demand for new capacity installed is high, several 100s of MW per month to meet 2030 targets according to the Paris agreement. The good thing is that there are companies ready to deliver, both with natural and fluorinated refrigerants!

SINTEF Energy Research has participated in this development through our research centre FME HighEFF and various other projects and contributed with various presentation with results from these projects at the symposium.
