High impact leaders create and maintain momentum!
Mack Story, Blue-Collar Leadership?
Developing the Blue-Collar Workforce and those who lead them.?│Author of 15 Books│Leadership Speaker│Trainer
"It takes a leader to create momentum. Followers catch it. And managers are able to continue it once it has begun. But creating momentum requires someone who can motivate others, not one who needs to be motivated. Just as every sailor knows you can't steer a ship that isn't moving forward, strong leaders understand that to change direction, you first have to create forward progress. Without momentum, even the simplest tasks can seem insurmountable. But with momentum on your side, nearly any kind of change is possible." ~ John C. Maxwell
High impact leadership is about creating momentum.
Almost anyone can lead when there is momentum.
However, few can lead effectively and create momentum when there is none.
When high impact leaders create momentum, they don't rest upon it. They build upon it.
I went through a lot of training with John C. Maxwell between 2012-2015 and have ready many of his books during the past 16 years since I began to intentionally create momentum in my own life (personally and professionally). The key has been reading daily and intentionally applying much of what I was learning.
John wrote about the Law of the "Big Mo" in his book, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. In it, he says, “Momentum is a leader’s best friend.”
I agree with John and added my own fun little story about momentum, “Big Mo,” as the Conclusion to my book, 10 Values of High Impact Leaders. I'll share some of the key points below. Be sure to check out the book or listen to the podcast (link above) for all I had to say about Big Mo.
High impact leaders know how to leverage Big Mo.
Big Mo is a party animal and always travels with his team!
But, Big Mo needs an invitation to the party!
If you’re a leader and you haven’t invited Big Mo to the party, you need to put him on the top of your guest list.
Everyone who has partied with Big Mo knows he doesn’t show up to the party alone.
He always takes it upon himself to bring along his team.
Once you have Big Mo and the team in the house, get ready. The party is about to start.
When Big Mo arrives, don’t expect him to come right in. It’ll take him a bit to get through the door.
Why? Well you see, Big Mo is a really nice guy.
The reason Big Mo doesn’t come right in is because he’s holding the door open for his high performance team: High Speed, High Impact, High Energy, Big Advantage, Big Return, and Big Time.
High Speed
When he’s around, things happen much faster than normal. What took weeks or months in the past, may now take just days and sometimes only hours.
High Impact
She leaves a trail of results everywhere she goes. People who were mediocre before are now performing at levels you had only dreamed about in the past.
High Energy
He is the one who does some pretty astonishing things. He gets those people barely able to show up on time, to show up early.
Big Advantage
She changes everything. She brings a totally different perspective to the party. She has a way of putting the right people in the right place for the right reason at the right time.
Big Return
This guy is in charge of the payoff. You’ll always know when he’s around because morale and sales will always be up.

Big Time
She’s in charge of all the fun. She knows, all too well, Big Mo likes to have fun at his parties. She’s in charge of celebrating the big wins and is also always acknowledging the small wins.
Make it happen!
As a high impact leader, you are responsible for creating momentum.
Don’t lose track of this fact. Leadership is influence.
Anyone, at any time, can become the leader. Anyone can create momentum.
Often to keep momentum going, you must pass the baton as relay runners do when they’re competing. Don’t hesitate to pass the baton when you get tired. But whatever you do, don’t drop it. Keep holding on to it and keep running the race.
Momentum IS a leader’s best friend!
If there’s no momentum in your team or organization and you’re the leader, it’s not your team’s fault. It’s your fault.

“My first words are, GET SIGNED UP! This training is not, and I stress, not your everyday leadership seminar! I have never been a part of anything like it. After 30 years in technology and two years in Concrete Construction, I have attended dozens and sent hundreds to the so-called ‘Leadership-Training.’ I can tell you that while all of the courses, classes, webinars, and seminars, had good intentions, nothing can touch what Mack and Ria Story provide. I just wish I had it 20 years ago…I could go on-and-on…100% of the team that attended said that they were ‘blown-away, they did not see that conviction and passion coming.’ Many thanks, Mack and Ria!” ~ Sam McLamb, VP, CMP
