High hopes for the hybrids
A surplus of patience seems to be prerequisite for anyone commentating on – or investing in – innovation in the aquaculture industry. So many of the supposed game-changers – from RAS, to novel feed ingredients, to kelp farming – have yet to create the paradigm shift that their proponents have promised. While there’s been progress, it’s been decidedly glacial. Given this context, the rapid emergence of hybrid flow-through salmon farms is quite remarkable. Especially as some are already turning a profit.
While systems that produce high value fish in some of the world’s richest countries aren’t going to do much for global food security, it’s refreshing to see the dawn of an aquaculture sub-sector that has potential for rapid success. — Rob Fletcher, Senior Editor
