High Employee Engagement, Low Business Outcomes

A few days ago I had a conversation with the a member of the C-Suite of a medium-sized company that prompted me to create the article below.? We were discussing employee engagement and a seeming paradox she was seeing in some of her company’s teams.

Employee engagement is often touted as the holy grail of organizational success. A highly engaged workforce is generally associated with increased productivity, improved customer satisfaction, and higher profitability. However, there are situations where even a seemingly engaged team might not deliver the expected business outcomes. This can be a perplexing scenario for organizations, leaving them wondering where the disconnect lies.

Several factors can contribute to this seemingly contradictory situation. One key reason is the misalignment between employee engagement and organizational goals. While employees might be enthusiastic and motivated, their efforts might not be directed towards achieving the desired outcomes. This could be due to unclear or conflicting goals, lack of resources or support, or inefficient processes that hinder their ability to translate their engagement into concrete results.

Another challenge is focusing on the wrong aspects of engagement. Organizations might prioritize metrics like employee satisfaction and happiness, which are valuable indicators, but they might not directly translate to business results if they are not coupled with metrics that measure actual performance and impact. Additionally, short-term engagement initiatives without addressing deeper issues like ineffective leadership or outdated systems can lead to a temporary boost in engagement that fizzles out in the long run.

Furthermore, external factors beyond employee control can also play a role. Economic downturns, industry disruptions, or unforeseen market changes can significantly impact business outcomes, even with a highly engaged workforce. Finally, focusing solely on individual engagement without fostering strong team dynamics can hinder collective success. Even if individual team members are highly motivated, their efforts might not translate into tangible results if they struggle to collaborate effectively.

Team Coaching Can Help Organizations Bridge the Gap

So, what can organizations do to bridge the gap between high employee engagement and low business outcomes? This is where team coaching emerges as a powerful tool. Team coaching goes beyond individual development and focuses on enhancing the collective performance and dynamics of a team. It can address several of the challenges mentioned above by:

  • Facilitating goal clarity and alignment: Through guided discussions and exercises, team coaching helps teams articulate shared goals, understand individual roles, and ensure everyone is working towards the same objectives. This alignment between individual efforts and organizational goals is crucial for translating engagement into concrete results.
  • Improving communication and collaboration: Team coaching works to equip teams with effective communication skills, conflict resolution strategies, and collaborative problem-solving techniques. This fosters a more open and trusting environment where team members can share ideas, work effectively together, and leverage each other's strengths.
  • Building psychological safety: By creating a safe space for open communication and honest feedback, team coaching helps the organization build trust and psychological safety within the team. This allows team members to take risks, learn from mistakes, and contribute their full potential without fear of judgment or repercussions.
  • Developing adaptability and resilience: Team coaching helps teams develop and apply the skills and mindset to adapt to change and navigate challenges. This is crucial in today's dynamic business environment, where unforeseen situations and disruptions can occur frequently.
  • Identifying and addressing underlying issues: Through facilitated discussions and assessments, team coaching can help uncover deeper issues that might be hindering performance, such as unclear roles, inefficient processes, or lack of resources. Once identified, these issues can be addressed by the organization to create a more supportive and enabling environment for the team.

Team coaches are specifically trained to partner with leaders in the organization and their teams to help them achieve their full performance. By fostering goal clarity, effective communication, collaboration, and adaptability, team coaching empowers teams to translate their engagement into tangible results, improved performance, and sustained success.

It is important to remember that team coaching is not a one-time fix, but rather an ongoing process that requires commitment from both the organization and the team. However, the potential benefits of improved team dynamics, increased productivity, and ultimately, stronger business outcomes make it a worthwhile investment for organizations seeking to unlock the full potential of their engaged workforce.

This is an excellent article. Businesses don’t succeed on engagement alone or on metrics alone or goals alone. Systemic team coaching enables the organization to look at the whole.
