Hiding is for Suckers!

Hidden patterns serve as the engine behind bad habits, much like the hidden patterns in a beautiful wallpaper that ignites endless joy in the creative mind.

But what if these unchecked hidden patterns are the very things holding us back, swaying us left when we aim to go right, especially concerning our finances?

The unconscious has a knack for revealing itself to us. Good habits thrive, yet they're often taken for granted, while bad habits, like weeds in a garden, stifle progress.

Childhood behaviour, innocent as it may seem, can embed dysfunctional patterns that persist across generations.

Detecting these hidden patterns isn't always straightforward; if it were, we wouldn't repeat the same mistakes, expecting different outcomes—an act Einstein famously dubbed "insanity." Childhood habits, ingrained in the unconscious, can wreak havoc.

Three severely bad money habits commonly observed among the western population are:

1. Living Beyond Ones Means: Many individuals spend more than they earn, leading to mounting debt. This habit often stems from impulsive buying or societal pressure.

What resonates here is the impatience, I have experienced.

Let me explain!

Something as simple as food items and useful furniture was immediately replaced in the home as a growing child. Whether money was immediately available or not, a habit of my mother and father and a habit of their parents.

Behaviour does rub off. I practised, "gotta have it no matter what", by any means necessary. This sounds great until it was the heavy burden of debt beyond my means.

2. Ignoring Financial Planning: Neglecting to create and follow a financial plan hinders long-term financial security. Without clear goals and strategies, individuals struggle to manage expenses effectively.

Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keeps the law, happy is he. Proverbs 29:18 K.J.V

In my twenties I would succeed month after month writing a spending plan. What eventually became acutely aware was the little I was left with each month.

What wasn't planned was holidays away or stay-cations, hanging out with friends and other things that I could do. I became stuck with this recurring pattern of the constant absence and lack of money, using this pattern to keep people away from me.

3. Relying on Credit: Some heavily rely on credit cards or loans to finance their lifestyle, leading to excessive debt accumulation and dependency on borrowed funds.

Addressing these habits requires commitment to financial education, disciplined spending, and embracing necessary lifestyle changes.

I put down my weapon of choice - consumer debt. The thing I hid behind.

It was a relief. Initially I was more concerned about my credit rating. At the time, keeping my credit score intact was killing me softly.

I embarked on this journey from 2010 and ramped it up by 2016. Relinquishing reckless consumer debt and prioritising financial health over credit ratings. Through collaboration and community support, I've learned that hidden patterns can be unravelled, enabling transformative shifts in our relationship with money and debt.

Now, I plan alone time and community time into my life rather than chase alone time to hide away from the world.

I would not be where I am without community that is exactly why I appreciate joining with others to help them find a way to transform their thinking and behaviour around their finances, including debt to gain insight into your personal vision.

Discovering that our hidden patterns keep us "safe" is the story we get to unravel. We are going to realise needs that we thought we never had and tend to them, most importantly to improve our relationship with ourselves.
