Hiding In Plain Sight
Raremark Foundation
A foundation that promises to promote positive behavioral change in regard to Sickle Cell.
We commend the Daily Monitor for shining a light on the growing burden of Sickle Cell disease in Uganda. This critical issue affects countless families and communities, and it’s essential that more people know about it.
The figures highlighted in the article serve as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by those living and affected by sickle cell disease. A child is born with sickle cell disease every two minutes worldwide, and the number of cases is on the rise in Uganda. Sadly, many die without even receiving a diagnosis within the first years of life, contributing to the under-five mortality rate. Sickle cell disease should be recognized as a critical global health issue alongside HIV, Cancer, and Malaria, yet it remains a neglected priority.
We can take tangible actions!
Let's promote pre-marital genotype screening among more people. Let's encourage individuals living with sickle cell disease to join support groups, such as those offered by the Raremark Foundation. It's also important to encourage parents and guardians to seek support from groups that can provide them with valuable information to help them cope and manage the disease.
At Raremark Foundation , we exist to enhance awareness about sickle cell disease through various initiatives, including screening camps, awareness sessions, and community engagements.
We strive to do more and invite everyone to join us at the #ShiningStarGala, where we can explore collaborative efforts to tackle this significant challenge facing our society. #KnowYourType #RareButAble Susan Nsibirwa, MCIM, MBA
