HIDDEN WOUNDS
We are all familiar with the image of our wounded veterans. After over a decade at war and with all of the social media and news coverage this is not something that is hidden from the nation. The most common image people see are those who suffered tragic events and may have lost an arm or leg. What the majority of people don't recognize are the hidden wounds our returning troops suffer from. There's a multitude of coverage on Post Traumatic Stress and depression and we see all of the coverage about how 22 veterans commit suicide a day. What I want you to ask yourself is do you really know who is suffering?
What I want to bring to light is that even though we see all of this coverage, how many people sincerely care and try to make a difference. We will all go through hardship at some point in life and like many veterans I am guilty for hiding all emotion, because that makes me look weak, and pretend like everything is ok. However, in reality it is the strongest who are usually the most sensitive, it is is ones who exhibit the most kindness who are the first to get mistreated, and the ones who take the time to help others who are usually the ones who need it the most. Just because an individual looks happy doesn't necessarily mean they really are. You have to look beyond the smile and the wall of they put up to really see how much pain they are really in.
So don't make snap judgement on people because of what they "LET" you see. We need more kind and sincere people in this world to truly make a difference. Sit down and really get to know that person. Sometimes its better to just listen and build that trust. Eventually they may open up, tell you whats going on, and get a little relief from their daily nightmare or struggle. Sometimes you may not be the right resource, so become familiar with other organizations and what they have to offer. We can only make a difference if we are willing to apply ourselves and be sincere in the process.
