The Hidden Treasure: How Networking with Friends Led Me to Global Clients

Once upon a time, there was a dreamer who lived in some small and cozy corner of the earth. Cared and talented, the dreamer of this call wanted his work, his ideas known to people in distant countries, in faraway lands. But the world was huge, and the opportunities were lurking, as it were, behind smog-like stars in a night’s darkness. How would they reach out? In what manner would they popularize their craft among the populace?

One day, while having coffee with a former classmate/chum, the topic of dreams and aspirations, of what seemed impossible to conquer alone arose. The friend looked at me with a patient smile and then asked, “Why not begin with the people you interact with?”

The dreamer looked deep in thought for a while. But of course, it cannot be that basic. But that night something dawned on me: the deepest levels are unlocked by the tiniest of keys.

And so the path was launched not with cold telephone calls and cold e-mails but with words with friends who already believed in the dreamer. “You need to help someone I know in Paris,” said another. Another said, “There is someone I know in New York looking for a person like you,”

These conversations set fire one by one, each contact being the construction of a bridge to the world over. The dreamer wasn’t just fishing for ideas; they were knitting them together on trust, one by one. Each introduction was also followed by a tale, an anecdote, and an endorsement that was always heartfelt.

By so doing, the dreamer got clients in parts of the world he never thought he would get any business from, including London, Tokyo, and Sydney. Work happened not due to marketing plans or well-structured proposals but because of relationships. Yes, it was business, but also friendship, conversation, and adventure achieved hand in hand.

The joy of that journey was that every addition to the client list felt like adding friends to the dreamer circle of friends and not mere clients with business deals. This was a new world once—infinitely far, unattainable, and yet the dreamer in this story was witnessing how the interconnections of the world made it work, and he learned that when one wanted to reach up to the stars, one had to begin with the light of the neighbors’ windows.

Therefore if you are a dreamer out there or are wondering how you could take your work across several oceans and borders, look no further than your neighbors. Share your ideas about the future, and hear the other’s. Combined, you will realize that the world is not as big as we assume, and these foreign clients that you are pursuing could be a lot closer than you think.

And then when you are about to take your first step in that new world you will begin to discover that every program is not a business proposition; it is a venture of faith rooted in friendship.

How To Build Your Network and Expand Globally

1. Start small, think big: Begin by speaking with your closest friends and acquaintances. You’ll be surprised how quickly word-of-mouth spreads across borders.

2. Build trust, not transactions: Focus on building genuine relationships, not just deals. People want to work with those they trust.

3. Leverage every connection: Every friend knows someone, and that someone could be your next big client. Keep your conversations open, and always offer value in return.

4. Stay authentic: Be yourself. In a world full of polished presentations, authenticity shines the brightest.
