The Hidden Struggles of University Representatives: Beyond the Smiles and Handshakes

The Hidden Struggles of University Representatives: Beyond the Smiles and Handshakes

In the bustling hallways of school fairs, amidst the colorful banners and brochures, stands the university representative. With a warm smile and an inviting demeanor, they engage with eager students and parents, answering questions, distributing pamphlets, and promoting their institution. To the onlooker, their job might seem glamorous, filled with travels and interactions. But behind that professional facade lies a reality that few acknowledge: the physical, emotional, and financial toll of relentless traveling and back-to-back engagements.

Imagine waking up in a different city every other day, living out of a suitcase, and constantly adjusting to new environments. The life of a university outreach professional is not just about attending school fairs; it's about juggling multiple events in a single day, often with little to no rest in between. The constant hustle, while exhilarating, can be draining.

Moreover, this relentless travel doesn't just impact their health and well-being. With the ever-increasing costs of air tickets and other travel expenses, outreach and travel budgets are stretching thin, often burning a hole in the university's finances. This significant expenditure, if reallocated wisely, could be used for deeper brand penetration, leading to a surge in applications and enhanced brand visibility.

Being away from family, missing out on important life events, and the pressure to always be "on" can lead to feelings of isolation and burnout. Then there's the challenge of food. Constantly eating out, especially in places where healthy options might be limited, can lead to a host of health issues.

So, what's the solution? Embracing technology.

In today's digital age, there's no need for representatives to constantly be on the move. Virtual platforms offer a viable solution, allowing universities to connect and engage with students without the physical and financial strain. High School Moms (HSM), Asia's largest parent, student, and educator community, is at the forefront of this change. With their extensive high school network and massive reach, HSM provides multiple avenues for universities to interact with students and schools virtually.

One such initiative is the 5th Virtual Global EdConnect. This event promises to be a game-changer, offering universities the chance to connect with over 2000 parents, high school students, and 500+ educators. It's not just an opportunity to engage potential students for Fall 2024 but also a step towards a more sustainable and cost-effective future. Participating in events like GEC reduces the pressure of travel and significantly cuts down on the carbon footprint, making it an environmentally conscious choice.

In conclusion, while the dedication and hard work of university representatives are commendable, it's essential to recognize the challenges they face and adapt to more sustainable and budget-friendly solutions. Virtual platforms like those offered by HSM are the way forward, ensuring effective outreach without compromising on well-being, the environment, or the university's budget.

Well articulated. Indeed, it is a big struggle. A very glamourised job on the outside is taxing on health, work - life balance and the pressures that come with the continuous travel. I wish there could be a healthy mix of virtual and in-person events with collaborative efforts by schools and higher education institutions. But alas…every industry has its FOMOs.

True portrait of the backstage health condition of all of us. I just finished my week long outreach activities in several schools and now caught up with cold and fever.
