Ready? Great!

Let's goooo!

Dear Reader,

It's Monday, and you know what that means:

I've totally dropped the ball on this newsletter.

I'm very sorry about that...?

I'm still a one-man operation, and I want to provide the best quality.

I have tons of loose ends and open projects to juggle, which means I'm struggling to live up to this promise.

Tomorrow, I'm heading to Portugal for a month.

I'm helping to set up a festival called Waking Life.

(if you've heard of it or are going this year, I'd love to hear from you!)

It's a passion of mine, and despite starting a new business here, I don't want to give it up.

So, I will spend the month of June recharging my batteries and figuring out how to streamline all of these time-consuming activities.

And still run a profitable business.

I'll have the answers when I get back.

(and will share them with you)

Until then, my posts and newsletters might be irregular.

Let's get stuck in!

Hidden Use Case for the ChatGPT Desktop App

The ChatGPT desktop app has arrived.

Most of the highly anticipated features have not.

We're still waiting for:

  • Super-chatty voice features
  • Borderline intrusive look-at-this features

In fact, the browser version got an update that's oddly missing from the desktop app:

You can connect to your Google Drive and run an interactive data analysis on it.

This feature is so wild that I'll be doing a separate deep-dive on it.

The desktop app, however, offers a spectacular option that not many people have discovered:?

Screenshots.

It doesn't sound big at first, but I take screenshots ALL THE TIME.

I swear my disk space is 80% screenies.

Here's how and why to use screenshots in ChatGPT:

?

Click on the paperclip and select Screenshots.

You'll see all the open programs – and their exact window.

Meaning: Your current browser tab, the email you're writing, and so on.

Using these as examples, you could:

  • Screenshot a LinkedIn post and ask ChatGPT to analyze it
  • Screenshot an open email and let ChatGPT write a response

What will you use this banger for? Reply to this email and let me know!

(Use the screenshot function for brownie points:)

NB: The desktop app currently only works for Mac with M-chips and the newest OS. Why? No idea. Seems ridiculous. Let me know if you have an answer.

AI Tool of the Week

Typeframes lets you repurpose your content in minutes.

It's free to try.

You can add text, drop social media posts, paste website URLs, and loads of other input options.?

The result will be cool text that bounces along with the audio track of your choice.

Alternatively, you can generate a video with stock footage or animated AI images.

Pretty sweet.

Growth Hack of the Week

Matt Lakajev is one of my favourite LinkedIn creators / businessmen.

He lives and breathes the best rule:

"Share so much value it hurts".

?? This post will make you grow ??

Read it, follow it, win.

That is all.

Prompt of the Week

Make ChatGPT sound more human

It's been a few years, and ChatGPT still sounds like a freaking robot.

Luckily, some smart people have found ways to prompt it in the right direction.

The subreddit r/ChatGPTPro recently produced a wealthy thread on a topic I hadn't come across before:

The "Dependency Grammar Framework".

In a nutshell, dependency grammar focuses on the relationships between words in a sentence and their dependencies.

It makes copy more comprehensible.

In contrast, phrase structure grammar emphasizes the hierarchical organization of phrases within a sentence.

It makes copy more logical.

Guess what you prefer reading?

I've collected everything I know about making ChatGPT's output sound more human.

Add these rules to your prompt instructions.

Then let me know if it makes a difference.

### WRITING STYLE ###

Answer a question given in a natural, human-like manner.

Use the dependency grammar linguistic framework rather than phrase structure grammar to craft the post. The idea is that the closer together each pair of words you’re connecting are, the easier the copy will be to comprehend.

Aim for a Flesch reading score of 80 or higher, aiming for an 8th-grade reading level. Use the active voice and avoid adverbs. Avoid buzzwords and instead use plain English.

Avoid being salesy or overly enthusiastic and instead express calm confidence.

Understand that 1 token = 0.75 words, so 100 tokens = 75 words. Keep sentences under 15 words in length, and try to include up to 3 sentences when writing a paragraph. Only go over if it's contextually required.

Don't use extremely niche vocabulary words unless explicitly present in a source document or other given context. Avoid C2 Cambridge English vocabulary level verbs, nouns and adjectives.

Write directly and concisely and avoid unnecessary details unless specifically requested. Avoid over-using "it" to refer to a subject. Instead, try finding a synonym or name the subject in an alternative way.

BONUS: Create a list of banned words and a file for your tone of voice. Then add:

You MUST adhere to the tone of voice guide in your knowledge files when you generate the posts.

You MUST avoid using any words from the words ban list.

News Roundup

1/ Perplexity releases "Pages"

You can now turn your searches into a full-blown blog article.

Just search.

Perplexity will use the context to write the text and add media.

As usual: This is the worst AI will ever be. Wild.

2/ Ex-OpenAI safety leader Jan Leike joins Anthropic

Following OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, Jan Leike resigned from OpenAI just one day later, on 15th May. On 28th May, the former safety lead announced on Twitter/X that he would be joining rival Anthropic.

I'm not going to speculate about safety concerns. Career moves are normal.

But it looks like Anthropic is flexing hard.

3/ OpenAI partners with News Corp

OpenAI is extending its partnerships with news outlets, giving it access to current and archived content in response to user queries.

The aim is to "provide people the ability to make informed choices based on reliable information and news sources."

News Corp publications include The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, MarketWatch, Investor’s Business Daily, FN, and New York Post; The Times, The Sunday Times and The Sun; The Australian, news.com.au, The Daily Telegraph, The Courier Mail, The Advertiser, and Herald Sun; and others.

The news partnerships raise eyebrows.

Personally, I find it reassuring that some reputable publications are included.

Especially after the partnership with Rainbow Press Corporation Axel Springer was understandably met with a sharp intake of breath.

The New York Post, though?

(seriously, google "New York Post Cover Pages")

Fun Stuff

Canva released a massive new feature range called "Canva Create".

This section isn't about this.

It's about how they released it.

Canva's youthful CEO Melanie Perkins hippity-hopped on stage during their recent conference and joined the gang of breakdancing, "heyyy, fellow kids" rappers.

Ready for some good ol' cringe?

This was obviously a planned so-bad-it's-good campaign, and it hits all the right buttons.

And we're done!

And yet, this newsletter may also change.

What did you love? What did you hate?

Comment here and let me know!

Until next time,

Robin Hanna

P.S.: You're awesome.
