The Hidden Danger of Aspiration

The Hidden Danger of Aspiration

It's year end review and forecasting week at See Agency and visions of PowerPoints dance in my head. At 4 freaking am.

When I wake that early in the morning, the quiet is surreal. Not a creature stirs, not even my dogs. (sorry I'll stop.)

For me, coffee + quiet = deep rumination about sharks closest to boats, and the shark closest to my boat this week is goal setting.

Here is what my 4am spreadsheets and I realized: "aspiration" is not synonymous with "ambition".

They're like twins with different personalities.

  • Aspiration dreams. Ambition drives.
  • Aspiration ideates. Ambition participates.
  • Aspiration has hope. Ambition has plans.

SPEAKERS: When forecasting your 2023 numbers, aim high. Go nuts. Put a comma in the % increase column. I'm all for shooting the moon and landing in the stars, etc.

And as you aspire, make sure you excel at ambition.

Put a plan together. Figure out what you're willing to do. Decide what you'll start doing or give up to get it. Be humble. Sacrifice. Invest.

Do it tired. Do it broke. Do it discouraged.

Earn the spoils of victory.

This is not a new notion, not even close. It's all over the Old Testament and Aesop's Fables.

Heck, it's what our industry of overcomers and overachievers is built on.

So speakers, get out front and lead on this. Eyes are on you.

Fight the temptation to aspire without ambition. This time next year you'll be glad you did.

Love this so much. So true. A goal without a clear plan is a dream. While I like to dream. I like results even more. The hustle is real!! Thanks, Christa Haberstock, for the reminder.
