The Hidden Crisis: Gambling Addiction Among Youth in Zambia—A Call to Action

?? Gambling: A Game of Chance or a Trap for Our Youth?

In Zambia, and across sub-Saharan Africa, gambling has grown from casual entertainment to a rapidly evolving public health crisis—especially among the youth. For many young people, the thrill of placing a bet hides a darker reality: financial instability, broken relationships, and crippling mental health struggles.

I had the privilege of speaking with Rinashe Magumise , a former gambling addict turned advocate, whose story embodies the struggle and the hope for change. After battling addiction for four years, Rinashe emerged as a voice for the many who are silently suffering, showing us that redemption is possible.

?? “The urge to gamble is more than the will to quit,” he said. And sadly, for every addict, there are 6-10 others who suffer the ripple effects—families, friends, and entire communities.

But this isn’t just Rinashe’s story. It's a national challenge that’s growing, with youth across Zambia and other African countries increasingly lured by the promise of quick money. The statistics are staggering: 54% of young people in SSA have engaged in some form of gambling, and the consequences are devastating.

?? What can we do?

It’s time for a unified response—governments, communities, and individuals all have a role to play. From stricter regulations to comprehensive education programs and support services, the fight against gambling addiction requires us to act now.
