The hidden cost of staying in a job that doesn't fit anymore.

The hidden cost of staying in a job that doesn't fit anymore.

Career Advice by Lauren Rauch: What Is Staying in the Wrong Job Costing You?

Have you ever paused to consider the true cost—mentally, emotionally, and even physically—of staying in a job that makes you miserable?

So often, we’re caught in the daily grind, jumping from project to project, just trying to survive the workweek. It leaves little time to reflect on whether the career path we started on still makes sense. And even when we do pause, the thought of making a change can feel overwhelming. Fear of the unknown and self-doubt creep in, leaving us paralyzed. So, we stay—stuck in jobs that no longer fit.

1. The Hidden Costs of Staying Unhappy

Staying in the wrong job doesn’t just affect your work performance; it takes a toll on every aspect of your life:

  • Mental and Emotional Health: Chronic stress and dissatisfaction can erode your confidence, energy, and overall happiness.
  • Relationships: When you’re burned out and unhappy at work, it often spills into your personal life, straining relationships with family and friends.
  • Missed Opportunities: Staying put may mean passing up roles that could have been more aligned with your values and goals.

2. My Personal Lesson: Reflecting on the Journey

I’ve spent a lifetime working harder, staying later, and pouring every ounce of energy into the pursuit of excellence. And while I’m proud of my work ethic and the milestones I’ve achieved, I can look back now and see a blind spot:

I didn’t always stop to assess whether the career path I was on was still the right one for me. It was easier to keep the comfortable blinders on than to question whether there might be a better way forward.

Looking back, I wish I had taken more time to gauge whether I was building a career that truly aligned with my passions, values, and long-term goals.

3. The Weight of a Toxic Job

One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is coaching leaders who are struggling with their careers. Time and time again, I’ve seen the transformative effect of making a difficult but necessary decision: walking away from a toxic job.

The phrase I hear most often after they’ve made the leap? “I feel like I’ve grown two inches taller.”

It’s amazing how stress can compress us—physically, mentally, and emotionally. And it’s equally amazing how light and free we can feel when we finally choose to value ourselves enough to make a change.

4. Why Do We Stay Stuck?

Humans are incredibly resilient, which is both a strength and a challenge. We adapt, endure, and push through, often long past the point of what’s healthy. It’s not until we reach our tipping point that we start asking ourselves:

  • Is this job worth my health and happiness?
  • Am I truly growing, or am I just surviving?
  • What would my life look like if I pursued something better?

5. Making the Leap: How to Navigate Career Change

Leaving a job—especially one that feels secure but unfulfilling—is no small decision. It requires courage and careful planning. Here are some steps to help you move forward:

  • Reflect on Your Priorities: Take stock of what matters most to you in life and work. What are your values? What sparks joy and fulfillment?
  • Evaluate Your Options: Research roles, companies, and industries that align better with your skills and passions.
  • Build a Support System: Talk to trusted mentors, career coaches, or friends who can provide guidance and encouragement.
  • Create an Action Plan: Update your resume, refresh your LinkedIn profile, and start networking. Even small steps can help you regain momentum.
  • Trust the Process: Change is scary, but staying stuck is often scarier. Trust that making a move, even if it feels risky, will lead you to something better.
