The Hidden Cost of "Blips" in Our Workday
The bottom of this newsletter includes an invite to our 100% free webinar on Interruption Overload and how to overcome it, which we're hosting on Thursday. I hope to see you there!
In last week's article, we introduced the Three volumes of interruptions (blips, beeps and bangs), promising to dive deeply into each in the coming issues. Today, we focus on the one that most people aren't aware of yet experience all the time - a blip.
Have you ever had a moment where you felt your phone vibrate in your pocket (or your watch vibrate) and then realized your phone was (a) not vibrating and (b) not in your pocket? Have you ever been speaking with someone and stopped listening or lost track of what you were saying because an unimportant alert crossed your phone or computer screen? If you've said 'yes' to either of these, you know what a blip/ micro interruption is and how distracting it can be.
A blip is a micro interruption. These bite-sized interruptions disrupt ongoing tasks or activities, often without the individual's conscious awareness. They briefly appear and disappear without requiring you to acknowledge them, but they pick away at your subconscious like the sound of a dripping tap preventing you from finding sleep.
They can include things like smartphone notifications, email alerts, or even background noise. Despite their brevity, they can still significantly impact productivity and focus, fragmenting attention and disrupting flow states.
It is my belief (and experience) that, for many people, the largest negative impact of interruptions in their work (and home) lives is caused by these tiny little interruptions that we barely acknowledge or recognize.
Unneeded micro interruptions may seem innocuous, but their ripples profoundly disrupt our productivity and well-being. Here's how:
Step 1 in Overcoming Blips
As we navigate our hyper-connected world, recognizing the impact of blips is the first step toward reclaiming our cognitive and emotional well-being.

We've unpacked the silent toll that "blips" — those pesky micro-interruptions — exact on our daily lives. But awareness is only the preamble to action.
Here's the foundational step to mitigate their impact:
Acknowledgment and Prioritization Begin by recognizing the "blips" as a real impediment to productivity and well-being. Once acknowledged, exert control by categorizing and limiting these interruptions to only the most critical ones. Is that notification essential, or can it wait? Establish criteria for what truly merits an interruption.
It's not about achieving an unreal state of zero distractions — it's about cultivating an environment where your attention is reserved for what truly matters.
