The Hidden Collusion: Unveiling the Dark Side of the German Auto Industry
This article is a summary of a jaw-dropping video commentary about the German Auto Industry - Connecting the Dots
The Betrayal of Excellence
Growing up, witnessing the fierce rivalry among these giants was like watching the Titans clash. Mercedes was synonymous with unparalleled engineering, BMW was the epitome of driving pleasure, and Audi, the dark horse, was steadily gaining ground with its innovative Quattro system and a relentless pursuit of progress through technology. These brands were the gold standard in engineering, luxury, safety, and driving experience. But then, the unthinkable happened, and the foundations of my automotive beliefs were shattered.
The German Auto Industry: A Facade of Competition
What seemed like healthy competition was, in reality, a well-orchestrated charade. Behind closed doors, the biggest names in the German auto industry were not competing; they were collaborating, forming a cartel that stifled innovation and manipulated the market to their advantage. This collusion wasn't limited to minor aspects but spanned crucial technological advancements, including emissions control, which led to the notorious Dieselgate scandal.
Part 1: The Cartel Exposed
Based on revelations from a Der Spiegel investigation, we uncover the depths of this collusion, starting with the deceptive simplicity of a convertible's soft top mechanism. This seemingly innocuous feature was just the tip of the iceberg. Further investigation reveals how these automakers made collective decisions on technology specifications, suppliers, and pricing, undermining the very essence of competition and innovation.

Dieselgate: The Catalyst
The scandal that brought the world's attention to these clandestine practices was Dieselgate. It was a revelation that uncovered not just environmental deception but also deep-seated collusion among these auto giants. They collectively decided on the size of AdBlue tanks, directly impacting the emissions and betraying the trust of millions of consumers worldwide.
The Cost of Collusion
But the ramifications extend beyond just the automotive sector. This collusion has led to inflated prices, compromised quality, and stifled innovation. It's a betrayal that impacts not just the automotive enthusiasts but every consumer who has overpaid for a car, believing in the integrity and competitiveness of these brands.

That’s what scares the industry so much about China. They have been engaging in a friendly exhibition match for decades and China has entered the ring throwing real punches.
